Going off steroid

Hi Everyone,

I developed cataracts in each eye and the eye doctor believes it is from the Dexamethasone I have been on for the last several years. It was only .5 mil. per day, but enough to cause them. My oncologist told me last week that I could stop taking the steroid. I stopped last Wednesday and by Saturday my face had broke out in a terrible rash - blisters, very red and sore! Has anyone else experienced this reaction? If so, what to use to ease the pain?

Thanks!

I would quickly talk to my onc. and maybe try to see a dermatologist. There is a product, Aquaphor, for people with extremely dry, scaly skin. It's basically vaseline with some other ingredients. You can find it at any drugstore, Walmart, etc. It certainly shouldn't hurt your skin and might soothe it. I would still see a dermatologist.

I’ve been Carboplatin through IV. It stopped working. I start Xeloda today.

Oh! That is so encouraging to me!! I just took the first dose this morning. I had such a hard time convincing myself to take them. You give me more reason to keep on trying!!

Xeloda is often one of the first chemo therapy drugs used with mbc. At least that was true when I was first diagnosed in 2004. For those with hormone receptor negative cancer cells, Xeloda or a Taxane (Taxol, Taxotere, Abraxane) were often the first chemo prescribed. I have known women who have done well for long periods of time on one or the other of those meds. There are alot more drugs now than when I was first diagnosed and what we do well on varies so much person to person! I hope you will find it easily tolerable and that it will knock those nasty cancer cells to smithereens!
