New Bone Met

My ankle has been bothering me for a month. My pallitive care doctor sent me for an X-ray and I have a new bone met. My oncologist said he isn’t worried as my only bone scan was in December 2017 and my treatment didn’t start till March so it could have developed then. I am having a bone scan and ct scan in the next few weeks to see if there are any other changes. Just wondering if anybody else has had new bone meds.

Hi Sarcie! Have a bone scan Monday...haven’t had one since March of ‘17...lol...so hoping nothing major shows up on it...the ones my CT scans cover have been stable for 2 1/2 years...switched from Zometa to Xgeva in September so hoping it makes a difference...😀

What are zometa and xgeva.

Zometa is an IV infusion for bone mets and Xgeva is a shot...both are bio phosphates...what meds are u on for your mets?

in reply to Rhwright12

I take Letrozole and Ibrance as treatment and vimovo and hydromorphone for pain.

Hi Sarcie,

Zometa and Xgeva are medications administered to help strengthen and protect the bones.

Thanks. My bones are extremely hard and brittle my surgeon told me after my hip replacement which he said is as bad as soft bones. Either can break easily. I don’t have anything to strengthen bones or to raise my neutrophil. With the new met on my ankle I’m wondering if new Mets appear with others (bone ) and if the new Mets are considered progression or still part of the original bone diagnosis.

I don't know the answer to that, Sarcie. Your best bet is to talk to your oncologist to see whether bisphosphonates (bone strengthening medications) would be suitable for you, along with supplements. I have been having Zometa infusions since last June (every three months) and I also take four Adcal D3 (calcium carbonate and vitamin D) supplements each day, which are on prescription.

Thanks. I will ask him. I told him some women in here get shots and he told me to ask what it was. Lol.

You're welcome. I hope you get some answers.

Hi! Just noticed u are from Canada...I’ve looked into your prescription bone supplements...one is called AlgaeCal...it’s not available by prescription here so u have to pay for it...about $50-80 a month...but it’s supposed to be better than bio phosphates...our television host Dr. Oz supports it but it’s not FDA approved in US...so u might have the better product...only time will tell...😀

Perhaps you should ask your doc why you are not on something like xgeva.

My Oncologist is in Halifax 😃. He is great but finds the Ibrance new enough that there aren’t sufficient studies and proof of what really works.
