Moving on from Xeloda to Doxil

I was on Xeloda with good results from Feb. 2017 until Nov. 2017 when scans and blood tests showed the cancer had begun growing again: new and larger bone mets, liver tumors more numerous and growing. I started on Doxil Dec. 13 and my next treatment is Jan. 10. On the first round I ended up hospitalized for 7 days (Dec. 23 - 30) because of low white blood counts and an immediate diagnosis of Thrush. So the oncologist is planning to scale back the dosage a bit.

What has your experience been with Doxil?

I am on a lower dose of Doxil every 2 weeks. I am a bit tired and nauseous but otherwise I am doing very well on it. I was on Taxotere and Cytoxin before Doxil and I could only take 4 treatments before I said ENOUGH! I was so fatigued I couldn’t even get out of bed! Doxil has been much kinder to me and I’m not losing my hair either! Best wishes to you!

I also want to add that my Onc gives me a shot of Neulasta the week after chemo. This keeps my white blood count up! You may want to ask about it.

Yes, isn’t Neulasta important. He did not give it to me in December, the first time. My wbc went down to 0.2 and I was hospitalized for Thrush. Also had a virus. Spent all of Christmas week as an inpatient. Last week my onc gave me a 50% dose and added the Neulasta Pro, the on-board device that delivers the medication 27 hours later. It worked great as far as delivery and I’m counting on better blood counts.

Thank you for responding. I’m glad to hear that Doxil is working for you, more than glad, thrilled. That’s what we need in this cancer fight: strong, positive emotion to fight alongside the medications. I am foggy headed, but it may be from something else. My hair is coming out. Neuropathy has returned to my feet and hands. But I hope and pray that Doxil is working. For both of us. 😇
