Hi, I’m very anxious and have nobody to talk to that’s why I’m here. I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend on the last day of my period and took combination pills the day after since we don’t have plan b in our country. I just want to ask if I’m safe because I can’t afford to get pregnant and abortion is banned here. I researched and saw that once you take combination pills on the fifth day of your cycle, you’re protected right away. Does that apply even if I had unprotected sex on the fourth day?

I’m not sure but there is still a chance you could be pregnant. Is there anyway you can get the morning after pill where you live?

However, you need to take the emergency contraceptive pill within 3 days (Levonelle) or 5 days (ellaOne) after having unprotected sex for it to work. The sooner you take it the better!

An IUD can be also fitted up to 5 days after unprotected sex, or up to 5 days after the earliest time you could have ovulated, for it to work. An IUD is more effective than the emergency pill but it is a much more invasive process.

I hope you can sort this out and things work out for you! These are the methods that are the most effective after having unprotected sex. A combination pill only prevents pregnancy, it would stop it if it has already happened. Best of luck. I’ve been in a similar situation and I wish you the best!

How did it turn out for you? I took combination pills the day after, since morning after pills aren’t available here :(. It’s been 3 weeks and fortunately I haven’t feeling anything, already took 2 pts and turned out negative but I don’t wanna be too complacent since I don’t know if it’s too early to tell, wish me luck :(

Ok so did you start the combined pills for the first time when your period ended ? or was the bleed you had the gap between the previous strip of pills and the next ? If you have sex on days 1-5 of your cycle , you shouldn't be able to fall pregnant at this time. We usually advise women to start taking the combined pill on the first day of their cycle, in which case they are protected straight away. Otherwise , it takes 7 days for the combined pill to protect you - so you would need to use condoms for those 7 days. The sex on day 4 should be zero risk for pregnancy - but since pills can mask the signs of pregnancy, consider a pregnancy test @ 4 weeks.
