Gonorrhoea shock

I have been told today that I have tested positive for gonorrhoea. I start treatment tomorrow. But the doctor wants to first take another test to check the results are definitely positive.

I decided to take a test as I’ve recently become sexually active with my current partner. I had no real reason to but I was having routine blood checks and figured why not go for that doing while I was at the hospital. Me and my boyfriend have always been safe: I am on the pill and we use condoms.

I have only had one sexual partner before and he was checked for Chlamydia (and I thought gonorrhoea) before we had unprotected sex. My current partner was shocked by my results and is getting tested himself. He says he had a full STD check after his last sexual relationship and was given the all clear.

I feel a little lost. I don’t want to get back in touch with my ex as he was emotionally abusive and the relationship didn’t end well. But if I have gonorrhoea I will have to tell him as I know he will not think to get checked and could pass this to more people. We split up over six months ago and I’m worried that, if I do have gonorrhoea, it has been left untreated for a long period of time and I could have damaged my body permanently.

if the GC test was a DNA test , there is a very small chance of a false positive result. If it is indeed positive, the treatment is a single dose of intramuscular ceftriaxone medicine 1gram. Your current partner should also be treated as a contact, unless last sex was more than 2 weeks ago, in which case he can simply do the test.

If the GC is confirmed, sexual health clinics in the UK can do anonymous partner notification - you can give them his number and they will send an anonymous text. You wont need to contact your ex partner.

uncomplicated GC infection would be low risk for causing fertility issues , if it causes pelvic infection the risk is increased. Unfortunately there isn't an easy way to test fertility - the gold standard test for checking for pelvic inflammatory disease is keyhole camera surgery. But many women acquire infections - and many have successful pregnancies.

Thank you. This is really helpful advice. I have no problem telling my current partner but it’s good to know the clinic can let my ex know anonymously
