Vaginismus

I have this year started my first proper relationship (i'm 32). I haven't had sex before and when the time came I explained to my boyfriend that I wasn't ready and he was more than understanding. After a couple of months, I decided that I was ready and we tried. The first time didn't work out but nothing hurt and I assumed that maybe I wasn't "physically ready" at the time. The next time we tried I was more than ready but this time it really hurt, he tried to enter me and there was absolutely no give at all, and I had to ask him to stop. He has used his fingers on me and I've been comfortable with one but when he uses two it feels a little tight. A few days after we tried I decided to make an appointment with the doctors and after an examination was diagnosed with vaginismus. I have also been referred to the hospital. My main question being that none of the causes on the NHS website really apply to me. I'm a virgin so have had no bad sexual experiences and my family is pretty liberal so nothing to do with my upbringing. Is it possible that I've just built it up too much in my head and am overthinking it or could it be that even though I think i'm ready, maybe i'm actually not?
