I was warned not to exceed pulse 85 but wish to play racket sports. In a match my pulse often exceeds 95. Can I risk this?

You don’t mention your condition age etc

When was it etc.

I had a heart attack at 38.

2 stents.

3 months after I was put on a rehab program where they monitored my heart rate.

Slowly my strength returned.

After that I went for monitored gym sessions.

In the end the rule for me was to identify when I was over doing it and to stop.

There was no specific magic number in terms of heart rate.

I worked slowly to increase my fitness and in turn my heart rate went down.

I wear a wrist heart rate monitor when I jog so I am always aware and also to connect what I feel to an actual number.

Best person to advise you would be your doctor in the end and overdoing it can have serious repercussions.

Sorry I couldn’t be more specific

Many thanks for an excellent reply and one that is very helpful and I believe most sensible advice that confirms most of what in the dark I had surmised.

I am 85.

NHS gives me a heart age of 95 but comforts by saying I will live (all being well) until 91!

Many thanks again John P

Take it easy. Don’t worry about when you will live until. We are all 20 in our minds. Trapped in an Aging body. My event controlled me. My fear controlled me to such an extent that I couldn’t live life. Having a heart Attack at 38 reminded me of the fragility of life. Enjoy your life, don’t let your fear stop you. Listen to the doctors in what they tell you. Take the best and leave the bad. I wish you well my Friend. I know what you feel and you are not alone.
