Does this mean I’m magnesium deficient?

Hello.

This is my first post, but I’ve been lurking for a while & can only thank you beautiful people for the knowledge and personal experiences that you so kindly share with people like myself.

I’ve been suffering with RLS for many years ( I am 44 yrs old female.) I actually didn’t know that my condition had a name! I’ve suffered through horrendous nights, flights, cinema trips and road trips for far too long, until I came across this website where I found out that, for some people, magnesium helps with RLS. At this point I also need to add that my symptoms were ( alarmingly!) spreading to my arms and hands.

So, I followed your advice and commenced myself on generic magnesium supplements taken at night ( 30mins before I fall asleep.) My goodness, they work!! Like by magic, the god awful fizzing/ creeping sensations were gone along with electric spasms and the constant need to move and stretch my legs, arms and feet. Truly, no one would ever understand the misery of this condition until they experience it for themselves, not that I wish it on anyone else.

The question that I have is, seeing that magnesium helped almost immediately, does this mean that my RLS was caused by magnesium deficiency, or is there another reason for this (seemingly) miracle symptoms cure?

Thank you very much in advance.

Warmly,

Patricia.

Good question. Magnesium only seems to help a minority of RLS sufferers so it may be that they’re deficient. There is no research on the matter so I doubt anyone can give you an answer.

It’s brilliant that something so simple has totally relieved your RLS. Much better than having to go down the drug route.

Hope you never suffer it again.

Thank you so much for your response Joolsg, I appreciate it.

Yes, I am beyond happy and relieved that the magnesium resolved my symptoms. In truth though, if I had to resort to prescribed meds, I happily would have done it as the misery of RLS is unbearable.

Since coming on here, I have learned that it’s a progressive condition with symptoms getting worse as the years go by, so I do have some background anxiety that magnesium might not be enough at some point in the future. Having said that, for the time being, I am enjoying the relief & vivid dreams that magnesium seem to induce.

All the best to you & everyone else in this priceless forum.

Hi, l too have found that Magnesium is my saviour.

I take New Era Mag Phos 8 and it works for me.

Years ago, due to reasons beyond my comprehension this wonderful range of products disappeared from the market and so in desperation l sought help from my GP.

And so began an awful cycle of drug after drug, horrendous side effects, weight gain, augmentation and despair.

I tried every other brand of Mag Phos, but none of them worked ?

Eventually, the New Era returned and much to my delight, even though rebranded, it took up where it left off.

I am delighted Magnesium helps you and can only thank my lucky stars that it works for me too.

Anyone who hasn’t tried it should give it a go, you never know, but as you rightly say, what works for one, doesn’t work for others.

Take care and good luck x

I am happy you found the New Era Mag Phos 8. It is what is called a tissue/cell salt. A natural product in low homeopathic potency. It is not the same as a supplement but it supports the body on cellular level by stimulating a better magnesium and phosphorus metabolism. So that it is able to be more efficiently utilised. Sometimes just taking a supplement is of little use if the body actually struggles with the uptake and processing. And sometimes magnesium is sufficiently present already but cant be utilised.

My husband profits from mag phos 8x too. As a matter of fact his symptoms have been very mild since he started using homeopathic remedies including individually prescribed remedies tailored to his situation. And he has suffered from RLS for more then 25 years. 10 of which were severe. So I want to give you hope that this can be a lasting effect. All the best.

I am so incredibly happy for you Legsandmore. 😊

I take a generic Wilko magnesium & vitamin B6 supplement that costs me very little yet ‘cured’ the symptoms almost completely. I find that, if I take it a little late into the night, my symptoms start and I have to wait around 30mins for the magnesium to enter my bloodstream.

I also take it just before a long car journey, not done it on airplane yet due to COVID-19 and inability to travel internationally this year.

Talking of which, last year, I really hit the rock bottom ( this was before I begun supplementing.) I went to Cyprus which takes around 3.5hrs by air from the UK. When I say I wanted to jump out of the air craft is understatement; my feet were so bad I was in tears. Weirdly it also spread to my bottom which made it 100 times worse. My feet were crawling, getting constant build up of electric spasms and felt like throbbing bricks, it was hideous.

I do feel so incredibly blessed that such a simple, inexpensive solution is working for me. May it last for everyone that is getting relief from it also. X

Happy for you but curious. The Mg. you are taking is a homeopathic formulation - homeopathy uses micro doses of substances to treat many medical conditions. Read more here...

Regarding Magnesium - after years of trying just about every type of magnesium supplement (including the micro-dose of Mg Salts you are taking) - they all excited me and contributed to profound insomnia - a paradoxical reaction - Mg is usually relaxing. I have recently given Mg another try using Magtein (Mg combined with L-Threonate, a metabolite of vitamin C to help with absorption). The jury is still out but it is cutting into my insomnia to some degree. It has also totally eliminated my almost daily leg cramps.

I do believe Mg is profoundly important for many bodily functions and biochemistry. But it is not just a one and done type of therapy. I think there are a zillion cells and spaces that Mg can occupy (60% is stored in bones and most of the rest in soft tissue, less than 1% is in the blood stream). So it might take many weeks to restore a healthy Mg level.

Thank you for your reply DicCarlson. The magnesium that I am taking is just the normal over the counter type with vit B6 added ( presumably to aid the absorption?) It actually started working pretty much right away with massive reduction in RLS symptoms.

I agree, magnesium is not one size fits all kind of approach, but thank god it’s working for me. I take the approach of, ‘ If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’

I am sorry that you had a bad reaction with the insomnia, but also glad that this has been resolved now 😊

Luckily, so far, all magnesium does, it gives me very vivid dreams ,which is fine by me. 😊

Exactly .. so pleased its working for you. I had to use the spray to get some relief many years ago as the tablets didn't work I suppose its a problem with absorption as we get older :(
