Multi Vitamin that doesn't induce RLS

Hi , I have never been able to take Vitamins because after 3 or 4 days they seem to make my RLS worse. I've spent a small fortune over my lifetime trying to find one that doesn't. I know we all are different and have different triggers but I am hoping that someone could recommend ones that worked for them without side effects. I am currently taking Horizant for my RLS and its working wonderfully. Dont want to take anything that may interrupt my good run. Any suggestions? I am 56 year old woman so perhaps something geared towards mature women. ( did I just say that) lol. Thanks

Hi, sorry, I've never heard of any vitamins making RLS worse.

I can't think that the actual vitamins themselves could be the problem. It may be that the problem is due to the other (non active) substances in the tablets/capsules. These are called excipients.

However, that's unlikely too as the excipients in most things e.g. gabapentin, are the same.

It may be that there is ONE vitamin that is causing the issue, I can't imagine it's all of them.

I do know that vitamins B6, B12 and D can affect RLS, but they relieve it not make it worse.

If you're eating a reasonable diet then, really there's no need to take vitamins unless you have either a known deficiency or some medical malabsorption condition.

If you don't have any deficiency, then really there's nothing to be gained from taking supplements.

Even vit B12 and D don't help RLS if you don't have a deficiency.

Hi Thanks for your response. It is absolutely the additives in any medicine that cause my rls to act out. Dyes, fillers... I have had this since I was 6 years old and have identified things that react for me. As for not needing a vitamin supplement if I'm eating right, there may be underlying conditions I did not put out there as my question was really just for recommendations. But thank you.

I took Twinlab Daily One for years, but it is unavailable recently. Started with Alive! Once Daily, from Nature's Way - lots of different formulas. Neither one set-off RLS, if anything the B Vitamins are helpful for RLS.

Thank you for your recommendation. It's the dyes and fillers in most otc and foods that cause mine to escalate.

Hi! I’m so happy that I found your post! I’ve suffered with RLS since I was a little kid. I had it under control for many years but all of a sudden it got really bad. Like real bad where I can’t even sleep in the same room as my husband at the moment or else he doesn’t get any sleep.

The only thing that really changed is that I started taking a multivitamin. I opted for a liquid multi from MaryRuth’s. I needed something that was vegan, gluten free and soy free and this checked all the boxes. So when my RLS started really getting bad I connected the dots and started researching “can mulitvitamins make RLS symptoms worse” and for days all I’ve been able to find are what multivitamins to take to help the symptoms.

So when I finally stumbled upon your post I was actually really relieved. I’m not alone!! What the heck is in these vitamins that are causing this?

I’ve never thought about fillers and additives being the cause, but man, it really could be. I’m very sensitive to a lot of food and have so many food allergies and now it has me thinking that maybe some of my issues are the additives and not necessarily the food themselves. I went vegan over 3 years ago because I seemed allergic to everything that didn’t grow out of the earth. But maybe it’s just what they are putting into the food that’s the problem.

I would be very interested to hear what types of additives make your RLS worse.

I’m sorry that you are unable to take vitamins. Especially if you know that you need certain ones that you are not getting or cannot get from food. Like myself. I’ve always been anemic and have had to take an iron supplement.

Please update this post if you ever do find a vitamin that works for you. And I’ll do the same. Maybe someone else will find this thread and can also chime in.
