Hi I also stopped pramipexole a few weeks ago went through a bad period but not now depending on them anymore Gabapentin also does not agree with me I had the most horrible nightmare so not on any drug at the moment I suffer severe insomnia but when it gets to bad I take zopiclone 7.5mg which at least gives me some relief

Thank you for your reply I’m hoping the meds will work ok

ooops, I hope you didn't stop taking either Pramipexole or Ropinirole suddenly! This can be quite dangerous and you can get quite severe withdrawal effects. If you stopped the Ropinirole less than 2 weeks ago, then you probably still have withdrawal effects.

Additionally, if you only just started taking gabapentin, it does take a few weeks to become effective. It also has some side effects which may fade also in a few weeks.

I'm not surprised you're in a funny place.

I may have got it wrong, but it doesn't sound as if your doctor quite knows what they're doing.

What dose of gabapentin are you on and when do you take it?

Hi I cut down on pramipexole gradually I was on a high dosage to tart with but I did manage to cut out completely over three weeks I do think it was rather too quick but that was what my neurologist told me too do and at the same time increase the amount in Gabapentin. After the completion of the pramipexole I was taking 4 Gabapentin 100mg at night until I had this sudden horrible nightmare/hallucinations that I ever experienced I was unable to stand up properly shouting out ans slumping back on to my bed I thought I was dying or at least a stroke than suddenly like turning a switch I was ok again. I saw my gp the next day who seemed bewildered by it all and told me to me to stop the Gabapentin for a week which I have done so to no further problems so I'm reluctant to ever go back to the Gabapentin it was such a frightening experience

Wow, doesn't sound like the sleep paralysis I thought it was!

What next after finishing with Pramipexole and Gabapentin

Is there anything without side effects that will help with rls?

in reply to Hoochybaby

I can understand your reluctance to try gabapentin, but I'm not entirely convinced that it caused your horrendous experience.

There are some details I'm not clear about. Were you actually asleep and dreaming when your experience began and actually dreaming. Were you conscious when you tried to stand and fell back again or is this what someone told you. Were you aware you were shouting and what were you shouting. Couldn't you control it? Was it repetitive?

Hallucinations are where you see, hear, feel or smell things when there's actually nothing there, what form.did your hallucinations take?

What you experienced is not listed as a side effect of gabapentin.

If first line medications fail, then the next step is usually an opiate. Opiates are not without side effects and problems. Nor are they easy to get a prescription for.

A very good question.

As far as I am aware I was awake or at least half awake at the time I was aware of what was around me but I couldn't raise my arms or stand and I was shouting out or help and suddenly like turning a switch I was back to normal and terribly frightened. I stopped the Gabapentin on doctors advice and haven't had a recurrence since New Year's Eve.

The silly thing is for the last three nights I've slept better than I have done for a long time so you can seem reluctance to start with the Gabapentin again

Hi Hoochybaby, glad you're having some better days now. What is working for you now ? I understand you're off DAs now. Am I right ?

Yes I’ve been off pramipexole for three weeks and gabapentin for ten days

I take back what I said, once again, this sounds like sleep paralysis.

You say you were shouting, did anyone actually hear? Did anyone see you moving at all?

With sleep paralysis it's usual to try and move, but you can't. It's also usual to try to speak, but you can't.

It's usual with sleep paralysis to be vaguely aware there is someone around you, but strictly speaking this is not an hallucination. You have to be fully awake to hallucinate and with sleep paralysis your senses aren't working and your muscles are paralysed.

It's associated with "paradoxical" or REM sleep. This happens every 90 minutes or so and is when our brain is very active, but your body is paralysed.

The phenomenon of suddenly snapping out of it is also typical of sleep paralysis

Your later description did sound a little like temporal lobe epilepsy, but now I'm certain it isn't. I'm pretty sure it's sleep paralysis.

When I first experienced it, it scared the hell out of me. As it repeated, it remained unpleasant, but I knew what it was and I knew I would snap out of it. It wasn't quite so scary.

It's completely harmless.

If your RLS/insomnia gets worse again, I suggest you try the gabapentin again.

One of the main causes of it is stress, which is a vicious circle since it's so scary it causes stress.

However there is a theory that the paralysis that normally occurs when we're dreaming is due to 2 brain chemicals, one of which is GABA. Gabapentin dies have some connection with this, hence the name.

However, just to emphasise, sleep paralysis is harmless.
