Hi peeps

Has anyone tried Buprenorphine , just wondering if it is the same as oxycodone.

There are some quite technical similarities and differences between the two.

Differences only

Buprenorphine is less suited to oral ingestion, its bioavailability is lower and more variable

There may be genetic differences in the way the drugs are transported.

Both act on mu and kappa receptors but Buprenorphinealso acts on delta receptors associated with hyperalgesia, (heightened sensitivity to pain).

In summary, Buprenorphine is less easy to take and more variable in it's effect, it can cause hyperalgesia.

This will vary between individuals, so for an individual you won't really know which of the two is best for YOU unless you try both.

This is taken from information about the use of opioids for pain, not. RLS

I am currently taking Buprenorphine. It is a buccal patch that I place inside my cheek. I was prescribed this by Dr. B. It seems to be working.

Great, there's no real reason why it shouldn't. Although the patch is in your mouth, it's going through the mucus membrane into the blood stream not the gastrointestinal tract which bypasses that particular drawback.

You will be able to assess if it suits you, isn't too variable and doesn't cause hyperalgesia for yourself.

I just merely list the differences. I don't take either myself and never have.

I saw this mentioned on another RLS group i belong to , prescribed also by Dr B.

The strength is 75 mcg. You can use it every 12 hours. I only need it at night so I only take it around 2030 each night. Sometimes I need to use 2 buccal patches. I have only been using it for about 6 months. I have used Oxycodone and Methadone. Methadone worked better for me. However, I was having such deep depression, that my family doctor thought was caused by the opioids. Dr. B thought the Belbuca might cause less. Unfortunately , it has not. But it does work (at least for now) for the RLS. There are several strengths of Belbuca. I am on the lowest dose.
