Yes. It is possibly one of the most effective strategies for coping with rls around.

Keeping a diary of intakes and even environmental factors, can point up possible triggers.

A number of people find that avoiding inflammatory foods-- sweeteners, sugars ,msg and many additives can get rid of their rls almost completely.

Certainly worth a try before stsrting the medication route.

Also get your serum ferritin checked. Should be around 100.

Cheers.

Ferritin level is 100....unfortunately I've a sweet tooth but will heed your advice and keep a diary.....won't do my weight any harm either .

There is a growing belief amongst nutritionists that deficiencies are due to lack of sunlight creating vitamin d, and the diet being out of balance, which in turn affects the microbiome which helps the body absorb nutrients.

Lots of people find restricted diets have really helped them. Some find low FODMAPS works, others find a low oxalate diet or no carbs diet helps.

You would have to try each diet for at least 3 months to see if they help.

As Madlegs suggests- a food diary may identify any triggers.

There have also been studies showing a link with SIBO and bad gut bacteria so improving diet and taking pro biotics helps some people.

I have followed very restrictive diets for long time periods but they made no difference to my RLS.

Yes, I stopped eating sugar or anything containing sugar except whole fruit, so that includes cakes, biscuits, fruit juice and alcohol. I was already taking magnesium, Vit B12 and omega3 supplements, but added kelp (for iodine) and Co-enzyme Q10, and upped my leafy green veg intake, as Dr Wahls recommends for MS sufferers. I now only suffer mild rls when I'm very tired, or have eaten too many carbs close to bedtime, or eaten my trigger food additive E202. My resilience to letting things slip has increased over the months that I've been following the regime. Presumably the myelin on the nerves has strengthened.

Although this may sound crazy I started eating organic flaxseed and chia bread made by mestemacher before I go to bed and it puts me right to sleep and I sleep without restless legs. I believe this is because for me it's a digestion issue and the flaxseed and chia bread helps me to digest and that puts me to sleep without restless legs. Try it!!

Gluten can damage nerves and omega3 supports healthy nerves. Flaxseed is a source of omega3, so you're supplementing that as well as replacing some of your wheat intake with non gluten containing seeds.

I'm another who has seen RLS greatly reduce when I am very very careful about not eating grain-based carbs and sugar. It's worth a try; everyone responds differently. I can't even have fruit later in the day- an apple after dinner sent me over the edge one night.

This video was just posted on The Wahls Protocol Facebook page. It's not primarily concerned with rls, although it is mentioned, but gives a great insight into up to the minute nutritional medicine. youtu.be/74F22bjBmqE
