Has anyone ever noticed their RSL symptoms worsen after eating bread? I think it is exacerbating my RSL but not sure. Just wondering if this is a common thing or not.

Interesting...I have noticed that my legs act up when my blood sugar is high. Bread is full of carbs and sugar, which elevates my blood sugar. Do other foods with high carbs and sugar also bother your legs?

I will take note properly from now on, I have only noticed it could be bread and as you say carbs. I'm having a potato with my meal tonight so I'll definitely stay more aware. I don't usually have any problem with blood sugar levels being either too high or too low. Thanks for your response will keep you posted

I have noticed that sugar is a trigger. I tried cutting it out completely and was quite successful for a while. My rls was much much better. But I'm really addicted to the stuff and I'm back to eating it. My rls is back and much worse if I've had a lot of sugar

I have RLS that is triggered by a variety of foods. I am currently on a diet that excludes gluten (as found in anything containing wheat), lactose, caffeine and alcoholalcohol. I am also eating only low FODMAP foods. If I eat a slice of ordinary bread I will have restless legs for five or six hours for two nights afterwards. I eat a lot of rice cakes and rice based foods. Carbs don't seem to be a problem so I often eat potato. Meats are all allowable but normal sausages contain gluten. Sugar is no problem for me. Hot potato chips are usually not allowed in the diet because they can pick up gluten from the fat if foods containing gluten are fried in the same oil. The potatochips are often coated with flour to make them crisp when fried.

Interesting that you feel that you have identified eating bread/sugars/carbs.

I feel that I may have identified a trigger. Eating too late ?

in reply to m1946

yes, eating too late is also a trigger for me or eating too much. I have nightly symptoms anyway ( still trying to make myself go on the low carb diet but I think there's a sort of addiction as another said, and especially when tired which I always am ) but eating too much or too late makes it much worse

You say bread, but most people don't eat dry bread. Do you have anything on the bread? Butter, margarine, some sort of spread?

I'm not saying that bread won't cause rls, as I believe that rls can be caused by high blood sugar, so as bread is high in carbs, I would expect it to have an effect, but not specifically bread and nothing else.

I have also felt better and rarely get rls now following Dr Gundry’s highly researched diet that drastically reduces lectins (gluten is one too) in our diet.

This subject is so daunting!! Thanks kelirock for asking! It’s so helpful to me to hear what others find with their RLS. I sooo wish that the cause was known and a straightforward and united treatment was understood.

I have been gluten free for a couple of months now and it hasn't helped my RLS at all. This disease is so tricky.x
