Knee replacement
Surgery does seem to ramp up RLS for people, hopefully you will be given some pain meds for you post op and they should help with the RLS. Also ask for Zofran as the anti-nausea med as its the only one that doesnt ramp up RLS after surgery.
I seriously doubt that knee replacement would eleviate RLS. There is a part of our brain that won't allow our bodies to rest. Bottom line ... this is why we have RLS.
I seriously empathise with you having to undergo your surgery. I have had Total Hip Replacement Surgery (caused by an RLS fall where I broke my leg where it joined the hip. And the recovery was extremely difficult. I found the execution of the physio impossible to continue as my knee would turn red and swell to almost twice in size.
My orthopedic surgeon is hesitant to perform hip replacement surgery (altho it is obvious that it is required) as the recuperation time is longer than the hip and the pain is quite substantial.
However, I have discussed this theory with folks who have had knee replacement and their responses have all been the same, 'best thing they have ever done'. I guess I am just a woose !!
I truly wish you all the luck in the world.
Sorry I meant that my ortho is hesitant to perform knee replacement, not hip.
Hi Carole. I had total knee replacement surgery on my right knee around 10 years ago. The only difference I find with my RLS is that on the occasions when it is present in that knee (I have RLS all over, but not usually all areas at the same time) there is also a sort of sick ache accompanying it inside and I have the compulsion to rub it constantly. I alo find in very cold weather my knee feels icy inside and I rend to wrap it up. The result of having titanium inside it, perhaps?!
