Funny you should say that about sweet things/ sugar. I am forming the same conclusion myself. Your experience with slow-release is also similar to mine.

What meds are you on, I do believe sweet things make a difference also I think magnesium flakes in a bath give relief That what I have if my legs start to feel niggle It realy does help. Think of yourself as its you that suffers xx

Ah damn you beady3!!! Please don't tell me sweet things exacerbate RLS - I stopped caffeine, smoking, sweeteners and now I'll have to give up chocolate?!?! A step too far!

IS this anecdotal evidence or are there any studies out there that share this finding?

Good luck on the Tramadol. For me of all the drugs and techniques that I have tried I found Tramadol gave me the longest relief without all the nasty side-effects.

O dear raffs I think you need a cuddle you did make me chuckle,I only know how sweet thing are with me that's all,yes I am getting on ok with the Tramodol the sickness and sleepy felling have gone thank you,be good x

Hi raffs, there have been no studies on whether caffeine, smoking, sweeteners, chocolate, or any other food or drink makes RLS worse. Its all an individual thing, some find nothing affects their RLS, some find alot of stuff does. Because soooooo many people were finding these foods, drink smoking etc etc altho no studies were done they added these things to the list of things to avoid to improve RLS. For me and i am sure many others, i can eat any of those foods and i am fine no worse RLS. Maybe, just maybe alcohol may be the only thing that could be a trigger for my RLS. If there are any studies, then some how i missed finding them.

OK chocolate is back on the menu :) I found alcohol effects me even 1 or 2 drinks and it sets my legs off something serious. I think that a recent New Scientist book mentioned about the harmful effects of aspartame here is a link to sweeteners and RLS:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/176...

Can't vouch for the validity of the study but it may hint at a direction for some.

I have looked at Iron, Magnesium and Potassium supplements as they have been linked to RLS but never thought of cutting food stuffs out. Might have to give sugar a miss to see.

I looked at the link, and yes a study done on one person and the finding seem to point to that person having sweeteners was a trigger for their RLS. As i said its an individual thing, everyone has to find what it is that is their trigger or triggers. Having low ferritin can for some be a cause of their RLS. Some find magnesium helps to improve their RLS, dont hear to much from people on whether potassium helps. I eat banana's every day, and never seen any improvement for my RLS. Oh dear, seems as if alcohol is your trigger, hope the chocolate or sugary food isnt one too. Its bad enough we all have to suffer with RLS, without having to give up our comfort foods or drinks. BUT, if thats what it takes to help to improve our RLS then i guess its worth it. sigh... :)

I had to forsake drink years ago, (although I do like a beer or two on hoiday and as said even at that level its not good).

I will have to draw up a plan for the sweets, I know its not good anyway and I can use the 'carrot' of RLS free times to keep me motivated.

Thanks beady3 I ALWAYS am in the market for cuddles, you may send one over the waves to me. Since I wont be getting my chocolate fix I'll need more sweetness elsewhere :)
