Quitting smoking from today

Hello there,

I am new to this so forgive me if there is any other posts like this one.

I am 27 years old and have decided to quit smoking as of today - a tough decision as my colleagues and I are due down the pub after work tonight.

I've been smoking for about 7 years roughly, managed to quit once for about a year but circumstances lead me to fall off the bandwagon - silly now I think about it.

Is there anything you can advise for quitting, it will be a few weeks before I can invest in any stopping aids - sorry if this is a silly question but when I last quit I relied on E-cigs which I would like to try and not use.

Thank you so much :)

Hiya nikki and welcome 😊

quitting is the best you can do for your health and wealth and the fact that you are still young whilst doing it is definitely in your favour 😊

Sounds like you are gonna be cold turkey for a while but we have a number of quitters who have been really successful in doing that so I'm sure they will advise you😊

Some people find drink and smoke go together. For me personally I never really liked that whole rushed feeling of going outside to smoke..... So I'm gonna hope that its torrential rain and then bucket loads of snow just round the pub tonight so you won't want to smoke😊

You can only take it one day at a time but hangovers are not as bad when you don't smoke. No additional 4000+ toxins might have something to do with it!!

Are you in the uk? If so you can get help with the cost of NRT....

Good luck with your quit and remember NOPE.... Not One Puff Ever 🚭🚭🚭🚭🚭🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀

Hello droopyJ,

Thank you for your reply, fingers crossed for rain and snow later!

I think it will be a good trial to be honest. I did not realise hangovers are not as bad - yet another plus!

I shall definitely look into help with the cost of NRT!

Thank you for the support and suggestions, its nice to be on here getting great advice from others :).

Hiya, I am due to give up on Monday after nearly 6 years of smoking. I am not sure what support I can offer you as I have never given up before, but feel free to message me and maybe we could support each other? :)

Hello Jess,

I would like that and vice versa to you too :), I can see from your previous post that your partner still smokes - I am in a similar boat - my other half social smokes, which I think will be the toughest part for me so it would be good to discuss things with someone going through something similar.

Of course my love. Feel free to message me whenever. I think its gonna be pretty difficult and im probably going to be really moody and snappy, but im sure once my other half sees I am serious he will begin smoking outside and stuff.

I have been thinking about when I will be socialising / drinking, I think I am going to get myself a vape, just so that I can have a puff on that. I think that will be the hardest part. Luckily I don't drink a huge amount so it wont catch me out every weekend bu, hey we will see!

You should be able to make an appointment at the doctors for the NHS smoking cessation clinics, that's what I did and I am getting it the NRT for free :)

Keep me updated with how your getting on! :)

Hi Redheadednikki, a big warm welcome to our quit support community :) :) and its great to know you've quit smoking as of today :)

My advice to you Nikki, is to go see your GPs or if you have a local chemist that has a smoking cessation in place, cos then you can get your NRT for the cost of a prescription which saves a lot of money eh :)

If you have a look to the right, you will see Pinned Posts and Topics, have a read through them cos there's loads of help their :)

Good luck Nikki and hope to speak soon :)

Pete :)

Hi there,

Best advice I can give you is prepare for the quit. I had tried a couple of times to quit before by just deciding off the cuff that i would quit, and for me it didnt work. This time i planned it all, slowly moved from real smokes to the vape, and eventually lost the will to smoke real cigarettes so just gave my remaining ciggies away and stuck with the vape.

Your brain is going to start playing all kinds of mad tricks on you, but remember those urges do get better.

I found that the cigarette after my evening meal was the killer for me, so i went out for walks, or i would come on here and just chat until the craving passed.

Its the best thing you can do for yourself, and although it may take some strength, if i can do it, anyone can. xx

Well you have received a warm welcome and good advice already! I would like to echo "pinkiezoom's" advice to "be prepared". Also check with your GP and check out our pinned posts as Monky advises. Planning ahead makes it a lot smoother and increases your success rate. I think it is great that you have already found another newbie quitter to relate with. Keep us posted and if you hit any bumps in the road then just keep on trying -- it is well worth it!

Get to your local chemist and speak to the pharmacist, they can organise with you a day to quit and supply patches, lozenges gum and other aids all free ( in Scotland, I don't know if you pay elsewhere in the UK ) . Even a prescription charge is cheaper than smoking. I found it too easy to smoke cigarettes when vaping as you inhale, so this time I'm on patches and nearly 2 weeks without a cigarette. Yes, I crave cigarettes but I'm eating instead. Lots of luck
