Cough

After over 40 years of heavy smoking up to 60 a day. I finally managed to quit, now been stopped over one year. Lately however I have a tickly cough that is getting to be annoying after 4 weeks. Wondered is it normal a year after quitting to develop a cough.

I am putting this post on which Emjay put on a while ago. Hopefully help you.

Wondering why you have that awful dry cough? Or why you are coughing up all that horrible 'stuff'?

Here's a reason why it may be;

Smoking paralyses the tiny hairs, or cilia, which line your windpipe and helps to clear dirt and mucus out of your lungs. When you stop smoking, the cilia start to work properly again and so you may experience more coughing and phlegm. If you can imagine all those hairs laying flat for so long and now that you've stopped they kind of say "right lads, let's get back to work again" and as they start to move it causes a dry tickle... This is a positive sign of recovery, showing that your body is getting rid of the tar and toxins which smoking has left in your lungs.

These symptoms may last a while but can be soothed by drinking plenty of water or using sugar-free boiled sweets to help keep your throat moist.

Remembering that you are only coughing up what is not supposed to be there in the first place

However, if you're coughing persists and you become worried, please make an appointment to see your GP.

never got a cough post cessation till last few weeks. I hear what you say re cilia working again but after a year they took their time lol

Well, your over a Year quit now then, thats fantastic news

We are all different and our bodies react in different ways when we quit, but usually this occurs in the early stages of quitting so I would go with Jillygirl's advice and nip and see your doc, just to be on the safe side eh It will probably be a bug you've court, cos there's loads going around at the moment

Just wondering Andy, are you using any form of nicotine replacement still and if you would kindly let Jillygirl or myself know your quit date, then we can add it to the Wall of Winners for you

Hi stopped 4th Dec 2013. Not on any nrt. Basically my other half gave birth and being an old dad in 50.s wanted to make sure I was around to see him grow up. Had been trying for 20 odd years to quit nothing worked till Aaron came along.

Thanks Pete when he is older I'll tell him all about my years of addiction and the struggle to quit. Lol could have paid a mortgage off on money spent on cigs.
