I have quit smoking today and I am already feeling terrible. I am at work and all I am thinking is about smoking . I am trying to distract my mind out of thoughts of smoking but all it is doing at this very moment is making me feel drowsy and yelling out loud demanding for nicotnie. Shall I feed my brain with some nicotine or shall I fight it ? Please suggest

Hi Amitsibal

Well done for choosing to stop, you have done the right thing. I am no expert but Emjay will be along soon to give you some brilliant advice.

Firstly have you just stopped cold turkey? or are you using some nicotine replacement, gum/patches/ecig etc?

I am guessing as you are referring to the nicotine craving that you are going cold turkey, which is super brave, i have tried it myself once, and well, you have lasted longer than i did lol!

I had to take a double approach to my quit, i want to be a non smoker, and i am smoke free now, but i am on an ecig, so still getting the nicotine, but not all the other poisons on offer in a cigarette. But there are a few folk on here who have done it cold turkey, so hopefully they will pop on shortly and advise you x

in reply to Pinkiezoom

Thanks for your reply Pinkiezoom.

Yes, I am trying to go cold turkey . Tried with ecig before but it ended up in having a real ciggie lol. Tbh, I am finding it hard at the moment as I am used to go out for cigs atleast 5-7 times a day from my work desk and today I havent gone even once. So my mind is giving me different kind of ideas like borrowing a cig from a work mate or Its telling me to buy a cig on my way home after work .... and things like that. I am trying my best to command myself that I am not going to slip no matter what way my mind tries to play with me , but yeah it is hard. I really want to win this struggle with nicotine.... Nicotine cannot be the ruler of my mind and body... I am the ruler of my mind and body ! :)

Hi Again,

Oh i hear you and going cold turkey for me was just impossible, and yes all those sneaky fag breaks do break up your working day, but also break up families and lives if you get cancer, so in the long run eveyone else can have their nicotine breaks and you can enjoy a healthy life.

I am hoping someone pops on soon who is using another form of NRT to advise you, before you crumble and ask for a fag lol!!

When you say you have tried ecigs before, was it the type you put the liquid in? or the ones that look like a cigarette? Just i tried the ones that looked like a ciggie, and failed, but i am doing ok on the liquid sheesh type. But i am happy to be smoke free for now, and i will reduce the nic over time.

It is your mind playing tricks with you, and please please dont buy any, as you have made it 8 hours now, and after your first day you will feel more motivated hun.

Stay strong, pop back on here LOTS and keep yourself busy x

in reply to Pinkiezoom

Hey, I had tried the liquid sheesha type. I almost escaped failure. I bought a cig of a work mate walked down to the smoking area and just before lighting the cig I tried to be strong and succeeded in not lighting it. Came back and returned the cig to my mate and now I am back at my desk feeling much better. Damn... never knew it could be this hard hahaha.

Hey Amitsibal,

welcome aboard to Quit Support :-)

You've definitely come to the right place for help and I'm sure other members will pop on to say hello soon :-)

You are doing so, so well at the moment so lets work with that :-)

Have a nosie through some of our posts and try some of the breathing exercises. You can change the way you breath which will then change how you are feeling. There are different breathing technics that will calm you down, give you more energy, relax you etc

It sounds to me that you are already beginning to experience the psychological (your mind) side of stopping smoking before the actual physical (your body) symptoms :o

It takes 48 hours for the nicotine to leave your system - when not using nicotine therapy replacement (NRT). It is usually at this point that your body recognises that you mean business and are no longer going to feed it with nicotine as you may have over the past number of years.

However, the psychological side is the part where you need to put quite a bit of extra effort in to combat. Now, as you are already discovering - it is the trigger points that are causing you to feel this way. It's your mind that is getting you to relate to the moments where you would normally smoke and transferring this recognition to one big huge 'want'. If you can just learn to overcome these moments / thoughts then it will get easier.

If you feel that it is all too much for you, then it is worth considering using some form of NRT. You can choose to use a type in which you are getting nicotine delivered regularly (for example: the patches) or you can choose a therapy where you can take in nicotine just as and when you need it - so for example; and oral product such as the lozenges or gum.

Using NRT will never do for you what a cigarette will, but it will take the edge off the cravings and enable you to deal with things better.

Let me know whether you decide to use NRT and I'll find out where you can go and get it for free or for the price of a prescription :-)

In the meantime, stay strong and just keep on keeping on. Remember, as long as you just let the moment pass - you will be okay. I promise you, the moment will pass :-) It may come back again, but if you got over it once, you can get over it again ;-)

To get over a craving, you can do one of two things;

1. Have a cigarette

or

2. Let it pass

Either way the feeling will go away :-)

im on day 16...been tough to break those times of going out. I found the patches helped me massively...I just felt like I wasn't feeling so needy for the fags when I had them on...already im only wearing them on days or nights I know will be tough.x

Anything that gets you to where you want to be (non smoker) helps. For me, cold turkey was like ripping off a plaster instead of slowly picking it off. Much more preferable to rip in my view. I am 13 weeks smoke free and only fleetingly think of cigs. But I can see the NRT route is good for some. Whatever you choose to do, not smoking is a gift like Al says!

I won the battle yesterday - here it is day 2!. I am trying my best not to think about cigs - but I feel too lazy drowsy and my mind is making it so much more difficult for me . In order to induce some nicotine in body - I had a cup of tea and that surely did help me for betterment. I just hope to win it again today. I just dont want my body to give up on a stupid thing like nicotine. :)

Well done you for getting to day 2, especially cold turkey....massive respect. I think by tomorrow your body is completeley nic free :) how brill will that be.

Stay strong and let us know how you are getting on x

Hi amitsibel, we are doing such an amazing thing. This is also my almost second day also cold turkey. We have to be strong to combat these feelings once and for all. If we give in to them we start the vicious circle again.

We can do this :-) xx

in reply to

Hi Louby71 great to know someone who started around same time. Nicotine urge is gonna attack us with the same force more or less haha. totally agree with you to be strong at will to combat these feelings.... well... here we go ... and lets assure... we get this right and be SMOKE FREE this time ! :)

in reply to

Chin chin, I don't drink but that was me raising a glass to a smoke free life :-) xx

in reply to

hahaha.... im at work at the moment... so best not talk about drinks lol...but yeah .. its kinda hard to concentrate fully on work ... as i am habitual to cig breaks every hour or so... and I have no where to go now :p haha

in reply to

I got up got ready for work got to work but I'm still not over this flu so they sent me back home :-( I'll be around all day, so just give me a yell rather than go for a ciggie break :-) I'm going for a rummage in the loft now for my knitting :-)

in reply to

hahaha take rest ! Flu is not good !! ... Lucky you - chillin at home .. and imma slogging my arse here at work hahaha.... and yeah... i have not yet thought about a ciggie break .. but slowly my mind starting to play with me again.... im trying.. and trying hard to win this one too !! :) ...

Morning Amitsibal, well done to you and welcome to Day 2 :-)

Remember that no body said it would be easy, but most people say that it is worth it in the end :-)

Stay strong, stay positive and keep smiling :-)

in reply to EmJay

Morning EmJay

Thanks for uplifting my confidence. I am sure it is worth it and Imma do my best to stay away from ciggies !! ....hahaha

What do you do at work amitsibel? Being at work for me is the best time, being at home is the struggle :-/ xx don't want to give you another addiction but try downloading a game, that's what I do in my work breaks. Flippin candy crush lol xx

in reply to

I am an automobile engineer at Jaguar Land Rover, what about yourself ? and hahaha yeah Ive played candy crush and I suck at it ... lol... I am trying to pass time by reading news... but thats kinda boring too lol ..xx

Everything seems boring when your trying to take your mind of something :-/ I work for the post office! So I'm kept very busy when I'm at work no time for thinking lol I'm not due back in now till Tuesday :-) I also do my husbands paperwork, he's a motor trader, (so that keeps me busy when I put my mind to it lol) but I've just trapped my sodding fingers in the door lol they are swelling up quite nicely!

in reply to

ouch ! that must have hurt bad!!! did you apply something to it ???

Have you tried 2048 it's in the App Store, that should keep your mind busy for a few minutes :-)

in reply to

nah not tried until now - what is it ?? any good ?

Yes I ran it under the tap for a bit and have put some bruise relief cream on it, it's fine now, stopped throbbing lol

It's a free app so have a go if you don't like it just delete it, it's a bit boring to be honest but it kept me busy for a good hour till I got to the 2048 tile :-)

in reply to

hahahaha ..... i will give it a try surely... a person who sit near me just smoked and came in... damn it is tempting for real!!! :(

You can do it, remember your reasons for wanting to stop :-) I bet they stank though, some of my customers at work reek, and that's through glass :-/

I always felt embarrassed after I'd been out for a smoke, cos I knew I must stink :-/ it's not a pretty smell

in reply to

i overcame ... they were 10 difficult mins ... but again ... i just told myself... i cant let my efforts go waste... another mini battle won ! woohooo lol

Woohoo :-) :-) :-) it is so hard but every little battle adds up :-)

in reply to

indeed!!! I am glad to be winning it ... you dont crave at all ?

in reply to

Constantly :-/ xx

in reply to

lmao ! how you curbing it ? I am craving non stop since last 1 hour or so ... mind spinning... concentration going down ... legs getting restless... im just tryna hold on to myself... hope i win this one too :p lol

in reply to

I've spent about £6.00 of my iTunes voucher on candy crush up to now but that's frustrating me so I'm going in the loft now for my knitting needles, not saying what I'm gonna do with them though, I might just resort to sticking them in my eyes, but seriously my daughter is off college so she's just hovering around the house constantly, which is frustrating also :-/

in reply to

I've looked at my post that I put on last night about a million times, that is helping me loads, I need to go to the shop for something for tea, but I'm thinking we'll have beers on toast cos I really don't want to go out xx

in reply to

Ha ha beans lol but maybe beers would be good also :-/

in reply to

beans on toast is good enough ! ... Make a lil extra ... I am usually too hungry after work and I just cant resist free food !!! lmao... oh and I am gonna eat a lot .... COZ I AM STILL NOT SMOKING!!!! YAAAAYYYY!!!!! hahahaha :) ;) xx

in reply to

n dont stick them knitting needles up your eyes..... i am sure its gonna hurt a lot lol :p

in reply to

Ha ha I haven't dragged myself up to get them yet, but I'm going now! Beans on toast it is then :-) x how can you be on here while your at work? I'd get shot for having my phone anywhere near the counter

in reply to

hahaha im not at a counter... nor on my phone ... i am on my work pc ... working side by side ... i dont have to attend people... I have to do my work in time ... and i am able to do that lol ... this is just another tab that is opened with my browser at work lol....

in reply to

when you go to the shops... please dont forget to get a pack of B&H Silver ! lol .... (Now, I'd seriously Shoot you if you took the above statement Seriously by any chance hahahaha ;))

in reply to

I wouldn't dream of buying b&h in any colour lol they were my dads fave, he stopped a 40 a day habit 4 years ago, in my eyes if he can do then so can we :-)

in reply to

defo we can and we will .... without noticing my work day is almost over and i fought it well :)... and no doubt your support had been immense... you kept me kinda busy hahaha .. good job Kid!! browny points for ya lmao :p

in reply to

Glad I could be of assistance :-) and it has helped me also, you are more nicotine deprived at the moment than I am so I'm preparing for these bigger craves tomorrow xx

in reply to

lol just wait for it. I may have made it look as a big thing.. it is a cake walk really.... trust me ... you gonna rock it !!!

in reply to

im not rock in it today lol trust me ..... but i still not smoked :-) ...

in reply to
