Sunday morning, I was visiting with my daughter, Katy, in the lower level of our rambler. She still has unpacked, partially unpacked, or empty boxes from our move.
I haven't had a backwards fall in a long time; fine by me But when I got up from where I was sitting, I felt that familiar 'whoosh' sensation that that preceeds my backwards falls. Once it starts, I have no control over it.
So back I went, into a smaller, partially unpacked box; I was wedged into it pretty tight. To add to that, the box I fell into, also fell backwards, so now I was looking up at the ceiling.
Then the giggles started (I wasn't hurt or there'd be no giggles). Katy looked at me in awe and said "Mom! It looked like it happened in slow motion!", which is just how it feels to me.
Luckily, my daughter, Melissa, was home from college for the weekend, heard the commotion, and came downstairs...took them a while to get me out of that box & on my feet.
Have been thinking for some time now about getting a home medical alert device, should I be home alone & something were to happen...does anyone have advice on systems they like or did not like?

hi judy how's the coconut oil going !!!!! not to good by the sound of it i hope this was the only fall you had for a while mate you do not need to many to hurt yourself do you keep way from cardboard boxes or pick a bigger box that you can get out of i would not be able to get out myself because of MIDDLE AGE SPREAD THEY CALL IT [ i think my middle age has come around twice] that must make you feel better see yer take care peter jones queensland australia psp sufferer

I haven't given up on the coconut oil. The problem is my failure to execute...meaning I haven't been consistent in taking it; having issues w/taste & texture.
But that's dumb if it will help. So thanks for the reminder and I'll try harder.

The lifeline over here is excellent and if you get it sooner rather than later you will get used to using it. Over here we give a neighbour's contact details as well as relatives so that someone can come quickly. If you only need help to get up this is great too and avoids a fuss. Mum used hers a few times but forgot a few other times. She was 77 so not used to asking for help or remembering she didn't have to do things by herself. It works in the perimeter of the building and a voice will come over the main box and ask you if you need help etc. If no answer they send someone anyway. Definitely a good system for you.
I did call a company, Life Alert, that advertises a lot on t.v. Earlier this year while home alone, I had some kind of event or the other. Told myself, that's it; have to get an alert system.
It was a Sunday when I called. The customer service person listened politely as I explained my issues. Then she said, "Because it's Sunday, I don't have any sales staff for you to talk to; may I mail you a brochure?" I said 'yes', but felt a bit frustrated.
And...I never got the brochure; lol. For a home safety company...for people!...it sure left me with the wrong impression; they're off my list; I'll renew my search
Oh, I forgot...since we moved late October of last year when everyone starts staying indoors, we haven't met many of our neighbors yet, but you brought up an excellent point; getting out there and getting to know them when the weather is nicer.
However and with a grrr...we are under a winter storm warning that will bring us another 10 inches of snow, give or take, preceded by freezing rain & sleet during the day today.
And, the meterologists are already talking about another major winter storm for next week.
So it's been a long and hard winter here, not to mention dark and just icky. We're pretty cranky here in MN; even logically knowing we're a breath away from spring, by this time, logic goes right out the window...
