Help please with Mum's continuous wanting to urinate but can't go when she gets on to the commode.

Dad is putting Mum on twice an hour during the day she is hardly drinking any fluid as she is having a lot of trouble swallowing, coughing and choking, we have tried different feeding cups and bottles with tubes and straws she cannot hold a drink herself anymore so we have to hold the cup for her to drink. Mum has definitely gone worse over the last few months. Mum has repeated water infections and has been on lots of antibiotics, she was started on continuous antibiotics but Dad has stopped them as he was worried she would get immune to them, which personally I don't think was a good idea, he has sent a sample to the GP on Xmas eve and it came back with no infection but white and red corpuscles in the urine so he had to do another mid urine sample but hasn't heard anything back yet....Mum is waking a lot in the night also and again not always doing anything when she goes on the commode she just seems to have the urge but nothing comes...is this all part of PSP or something else? Has anyone else had these problems?

Thanks Jan

Hi Jill Thanks for replying, I'm so sorry you have this terrible illness too, I hope you are keeping well :)

Mum is sometimes in pain she says it burns but sometimes I think she just says I'm ok even when she isn't, the gp said there was no infection this time but these white and red corpuscles. Mum is so fed up and it's so hard to keep her mural up, as she just sits all day long in her chair and can't walk very far even with her zimmer frame, the only time mum gets up is to use the comode, take her to the shower room and go to bed which are both downstairs now in the lounge, we have to walk behind her holding her all the time.

Thanks again Jan xx

Hi Jan,

It might be worth asking for a referral to a continence nurse who should best be able to advise you. There may also be some medication that might help. I seem to remember that Mum was prescribed something to help. I'm sorry I can't remember the name of it but my sis might.

Hi my mum used to use a syringe to give a drink to dad only about 1 ml at a time and sort of squirt it thru gaps in his teeth,or on a better day she used a teaspoon. But it always took a very long time. Or perhaps trying sucking a small ice lolly. It may help x

My mother has had significant issues with urges to use the bathroom. She was in an assisted living and required assistance to use the bathroom several times an hour. She was not able to empty her bladder which created a constant urge to urinate. She got an in dwelling catheter several years ago which stopped all the unnecessary trips to the bathroom. The down side has been frequent UTI's which have been treated with antibiotics. When she gets a UTI it causes a physical and mental decline so it is essential to try to stay on top of any infections. That is the pay off with a catheter.

Be aware that they may be asymptomatic with a UTI and it takes 3 days for my mum to show a positive test each time. Meanwhile she goes rapidly downhill and can be completely immobilised before the UTI is detected and antibiotics can start.Do keep on to your GP and get the continence people in as they will give a lot of help and advice.

Hello JanStott

Your Dear Mum Might Have Damaged her lumbar spine ( L3 and L4) from the falls.

This controls the Sex organs, ovaries or testicles, uterus, bladder, knee.

Also - Cauda Equina

What causes Cauda Equina Syndrome?

Cauda Equina Syndrome is caused by narrowing of the spinal canal in the lumbar and sacral area of the back. This compresses the nerves leaving the bottom of the spinal cord. These nerves provide sensation and muscle control for the bladder, bowel and legs.

There are a number of causes resulting in Cauda Equina Syndrome. These include traumatic injury, spinal tumours, disk herniation and inflammatory conditions.

Symptoms associated with Cauda Equina Syndrome

Lower back pain

Muscle weakness and loss of sensation

Numbness in the groin area and around the genitals and the back passage

Loss of normal bladder and bowel control.

I Hope This Helps.
