Has anyone seen their loved one in a coma?

Dave has been in a coma for 5 days. He has not eaten or drinking anything during this time. It is heartbreaking to see him this way. I am so sad and I miss him so very much. Why does this have to be this way?

Thank you H. I sense that he is not truly with us anymore

Judy, I am so sorry. We haven't experienced this part of the disease process yet but my best friend took care of both of her parents in her home when they passed (both in comas), and she assured me that hospice helps the family understand what is happening. She said they have a small pamphlet that explained things and helped her with her questions. I am assuming you have hospice now, so please ask them for literature. They will know what you are talking about. I know it is only a small comfort, but sometimes just knowing what to expect provides a small bit of piece in all this anguish.

As for why...I think we'll be asking this forever. You are in our thoughts. Love and prayers, Rosemarie

Judy, My first wife had Cruetzfelt-Jacob disease (also a brain virus like PSP) and she went into what appeared to be a coma before death. However, when my mom visited and was leaving she said "I love you darling" and a tear fell from the eye of my wife. She wasn't responsive to us but I think she was still aware of what was happening around her somehow. My thoughts are with you. Jimbo aka Jim P

My darling husband,Ken, was in a coma for the last 2 days of his life last October , yes it was heartbreaking but we had been assured that he could still hear us and so we all talked to him to let him know we were with him. I could not wish him back with me to continue suffering with the awfull disease and now he is out of pain and at peace , it is very hard and my heart goes out to you , but if it is any comfort to you, he too will soon be free of this terrible illness and at peace and try to only think of him as he was before the illness. God bless you we are all thinking of you.

My father in-law went into a coma 12 hours before he died and died very peacefully, and was finally free of this horrible disease that took him in four months..

Judy, Did you get a final/positive diagnosis for Dave? You may remember me. My first wife passed away from Cruetzfelt-Jacob disease (CJD). Both myself and Strelley who post on this forum thought Dave's symptoms were more like CJD than PSP. I have not seen postings from a PSP patient who went so quickly. With my first wife it was three months from diagnosis to death. We were married 31 years. She had CJD. Now my wife of 24 years has passed on from PSP (a six year struggle). Maybe you have checked out the symptoms of both PSP and CJD and resolved the cause of Dave's death. Please let me know the results. Thanks and I feel your pain of losing a loved one. Jimbo
