Is PSP a genetic condition?

Hello.

Does anyone know if PSP is a hereditary condition?... My mother in law was diagnosed with it about 6 years ago.

Do we have to be worried about her children/grandchildren?

Thanks.

Hi Caya,

Most specialist say PSP is not hereditary. My mom had PSP & l asked the same question. I truly believe it is best not to worry but to be watchful for any signs as we age.

Hi Caya

I have also worried about this, I take after my Mum quite a lot, so I asked her neurologist specifically. There had been a report indicating that there could be a link with gene's, which might indicate why some people get PSP, but it is still rare. They advised me that there is no evidence showing that it is hereditary at all.

I am taking the same tack as Granni B, not worrying about it, for myself, my sister or my daughters, but just being mindful of symptoms.

I have enough to think about anyway while still helping my mum with the PSP fight!

No. PSP is not genetic and not hereditary. Any person with tau accumulation in the brain gets struck with the disease. No definitive cure has been found as yet.

My husband has PSP. His uncle on his mother’s side also died from PSP. His mother had many of the symptoms, but her husband refused to take her to a neurologist.

I agree with all the replies that these diseases are not genetic or hereditary. But I do know that worry does tend to run in families and that can lead to all sorts of ailments.

Caya,

This is the same question my grown children were asking when my wife was first diagnosed with CBD. While my wife’s neurologist said it was not, this online article on CBD/PSP explains it best. Jump to Genetics section.

PSP and CBD are under the broad category of Frontal Temporal Demensias at this site.

Our neuro says not hereditary but the more symptoms my husband exhibits, I swear his Mother did also.

His Father was much older then his Mother and had diabetes and neuropathy...so hard to compare. But his Mother definately; especially the eyes, stiffness, unsteady gait and rapid cognitive decline.
