Pain killers

Hi can anyone taking morphene let me know if they are taking other pain killers with it besides paracetamol, Colin is still suffering with pain and morphene doesn’t seem to touch it.

Also I have 2 what I thought were really good carers coming in 2 times a day.Colin is telling me they are very rough with him, I now sit in the room and although they seem to do everything quickly, I can’t see they are being rough, I’m not sure whether to say anything, for fear of their visits becoming awkward, god that sounds pathetic, I think I have just answered myself with that.

More important is trying to get Colons pain under control, just want to know as it’s almost like doctors are saying nothing more can be done.

Hi Helen

All I can tell you is that Archie had oramorph paracetamol and gabapentin every four hours and kept under control

Regards to carers I personally would tell them let’s say that they will do thinks right when your in and I did have a few issues early on but I’m a bit of a basket about how they looked after him and i bought cameras for every room he was in so that meant I could see what’s what on my phone or ipad

Since he is already taking morphine and paracetamol, acetaminophen, which is a common painkiller/fever reducer I'd stay away from any other drugs with acetaminophen. I know at this stage it's not much of a concern but to much acetaminophen can damage the liver. Talk to the doctor about increasing the morphine, which is going to lead to more sleeping, or replacing the morphine with something stronger.

Balancing pain control is a fine line. Doctors can give enough pain meds to block the pain but that will present a host of other issues, primarily mental awareness.

I’m thinking about going back to doctors re pain there must be something they can give him to help more. Will let you know outcome.

Hi Hellen 119!

I know that "magnesic metamizol" (Nolotil) is prohibited in some countries and that, curiously, has more side effects for people living north of the 50th parallel.

Below the 50th parallel it seems that it is used without big problems, always under medical supervision.

In case you live below the 50th parallel, this is our experience:

"Some medications have been tried for pain episodes. There have been some side effects such as confusion and daze, especially with opioids. Currently when an episode of pain arises we use progressively Paracetamol, Nolotil (magnesic metamizol) in capsules, mix Nolotil/paracetamol and if the pain is acute Nolotil in glass ampoules orally. All these treatments under strict medical supervision."

Re careers, can't you say to them that Archie is feeling a lot of pain as the disease progresses and he has said that it is hurting when they tend him. You can then ask them to be very gentle with him as you are very concerned that he is suffering unnecessarily.i would also reiterate this to the managers so that it can be recorded on his care plan If he continues to complain you can then approach the agency manager again until it is addressed. Maybe a gentle approach like this won't upset anyone and get the problem sorted. Just a thought.
