Funding problems - why am I even surprised!

My mum has now been in hospital for 6weeks. She was diagnosed with PSP in the first week so she is in the nations army of bed blockers!

The consultant neurologist immediately said she would need to go into a care home, the social worker, OT, nurses, GP all agreed. The only one who isn’t convinced is the Council Funding Manager. We are currently in a massive fight as mum is not safe to be at home on her own (I work full time) but the charming funder believes she would be fine with 4 care visits a day and a commode by her bed at night. I am beyond furious! Tomorrow is a new day and I hope we get it sorted as watching my mum spend her precious days in a hospital is just soul destroying.

Any tips on how to make the funding manager see sense are most welcome!

Wishing you all much love x

Hi Denise, I would if you haven’t already request that your mum is immediately fast tracked for continuing healthcare (chc)

Chc is not means tested and if agreed all your mums care would be paid for within a nursing home or at home, but by the sounds of it your mum will need full time care so she will need to be in a nursing home. Has chc or fast tracking been discussed yet? Don’t give in, fight all the way! Your mum cannot fight this so you’ll have too! I personally hate the way ‘some so called professionals’ think they know best, they don’t! Please come back and let us know where you are on this x

Hi Denise

Satt/Amanda is so right on this one.

Continuing Health Care is fully funded Care with no means test (unlike Soc Serv.).

Just ask the Neurologist to request an assessment for it. You could also ask the ward matron to make the referral. You might get a little resistance because there seems to be an instruction going around to avoid making such referrals because of funding shortages. However it your Mum's legal right to have such an assessment on request.

Good luck

Hi denisejoy

With Amanda and Kevin have said I agree with

Tell them all to take a running jump they cannot put your mum anywhere as she needs assessing.if u can get chc that would be great I got 19hrs per day 1st then went to 24 hrs

Hope you do get the help you need

Take care

Hi, thank you all for your replies. The Social worker is being fantastic. She feels passionately about Mum’s case and is really going above and beyond. She has told me that she is going down the CHC route too.

We have recommendations from the consultant, OT, physio & social worker so I am really struggling to see how the payer can ignore them all....

Today is a new day and hopefully the day we get a decision.

Enjoy your Friday, whatever you are doing 😊

Hurrah! The funding was agreed on Friday👏🏻😊

So, now Mum will be moved next week to a care home in the beautiful Somerset countryside. It is not what I would have ever wanted for her and it breaks my heart that she is in this situation but it is what it is and we must go forward. I will feel so much happier knowing she is safe and looked after. The care home has lots going on so I am hoping that she will enjoy being sociable for as long as she possibly can. It’s still a long road ahead but this is a pretty significant victory.
