CBD OIL- How to use?

My 57 years old sister is suffering from PSP. I came to know about CBD oil.

Can someone tell me how to give the oil?

Welcome to the site.

First off you need to check if it's legal in your country or State. It is legal in the UK.

Secondly it shouldn't react with other medications, however the standard advice is that if your charge is on any medication which affects the Central Nervous System then medical advice should be sought.

There hasn't been any research done on CBD oil and PSP/CBD however looking at other similar illnesses 6mg CBD twice a day seems to be about right. Some folk take that four times a day. The nature of the oil is that you can't overdose (supposedly) so going a little high is not critical.

CBD oil is one of those active compounds where each individual has different sensitivity. Also each person has a different maximum efficacious dose. Simply put if you go over the ideal dose for that person the efficaciousness falls off. Better too little than too much.

Also better to start off at a very low test dose and build up over a week.

We use 6mg twice daily.

Now as to what brand. There are some really duff ones out there. Hemp oil for example is not CBD oil - its made from the parts of the plant with low CBD.

Then ideally it needs to be cold extracted rather than chemically extracted.

The easiest ones are those which have a spray delivering 6mg under the tongue per squirt.

Can you tell me how CBD helps Psp symptoms? I asked the neurologist at UCSF. He didn't know either but wasn't opposed to trying it.

If you do a search on the forum you will find a few lengthy posts which I have written.

Looking at the Parkinson's CBD research, there haven't been any on PSP/CBD it supplements the brains lowered levels of cannabinol and uses the brains cannabinol metabolic pathways. These particularly control the release of sugars at the bodies cellular level and some of the chemistry surrounding muscles.

Folk with Parkinson's had lower level of cramping, muscle stiffness and tremors.

If you do a web search for Cannabinol and Parkinson's you will find the research.

With this in mind some of us have been trying it for PSP/CBD. Some found it made no difference others report feeling physically more relaxed, mentally less anxious, lowering of muscle stiffness, more ability to open their mouth and increased limb movement.

It's really a case of try it and see.

My sister lives in Pakistan. Cannabis is illegal there but medicinal use is not prohibited. There is a form of cannabis that is grown in Pakistan hence, easily available but its probably not as potent as the ones breeders have developed which has specific ratios of cannabinoids. I purchased CBD oil 3mg yesterday but someone who knows about the medicinal usage of CBD oil said it's too low in strength.

The medicines she is taking at the moment are:

Ascard, Lipiget, Sitamet, Sinemet, Serc, Venlafaxine, Rivotril. PK Merz. I am not sure if any of the drugs she is currently taking can/will interfere with CBD oil.

Can we try the other form of cannabis that is easily available either as a fresh plant or concentrate? How to measure its strength or dose if we decide to go ahead with it?

There are a lot if if's, but's and assumptions in my reply.

First off have your sisters meds. been reviewed recently? Speaking as 'not a doctor' two medications there really stand out.

Serc which is often used for Menier's syndrome and vertigo. Serc increases the blood flow in the inner ear to try to increase its functioning and reduce vertigo. However in PSP and CBD patients the vertigo comes from the brain end of the equation not the inner ear.

Sinemet for Parkinson's. Very few folk with PSP respond to this and some for only a while. Does it still help?

It's always wise to get the doctor to do medication reviews from time to time, especially in poly-pharmacy where there is a danger of accruing more medications and not dropping those which are no longer efficacious.

Back to Cannabis and Cannabinol. It's really not for me to say whether it is safe to take either with those medications. Simply put, the research just hasn't been done. However it is reported that Cannabinol / CBD oil generally does not interact with other medications. Having said that CBD oil , to a degree, both aids sleep and has anxiolytic elements. So it is adding to the effects of the Rivotril (for sleep?) and Venlafaxine (for anxiety?) so those areas would need to be monitored in case your sister gets too sleepy etc.

Now the tricky bit:

Full cannabis has two families of active chemicals. THC, which is the narcotic group and which gets folk high and cannabinol which is not narcotic, but which has effects on the brain and body.

There hasn't been any research for using cannabis or CBD oil with PSP or CBD. So I have looked for indications that it might be efficacious by reading the research of other related illnesses where research has taken place.

PSP shares some terrain with both Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, but it is neither of those things.

Research has shown that full cannabis or THC can be beneficial with Alzheimer's and that Cannabinol (CBD oil) can be beneficial with Parkinson's.

Because full cannabis and THC are illegal in the UK I have only tried CBD oil.

I have some reservations about the use of full cannabis and THC with PSP as the persons cognitive functioning is already diminished and it might be that THC would further inhibit their ability to think and to interact with others in a meaningful manner. In other words it might effectively over sedate them.

Wild cannabis in Pakistan is likely really quite strong. Cannabis tends to be stronger the more sunshine it gets. The other problem with non pharmaceutical cannabis or extracts is that the strength can vary enormously as well as the ratio of THC to CBD.

If you do decide to try any of these do get medical advice if you can and do start off at a low level building it up to what seems to be the most effective dose. Stop immediately if there are any undesirable signs or symptoms. There is no withdrawal effect with either THC or CBD.

I do hope this helps a little, but please be aware all of the above are merely my tentative opinions and thoughts.

I really need to do some research on this. I have ordered a concentrate that come from rural areas where it is grown. I intend to send it to a research lab to get it checked for CBD to THC ratio as well as the strength.

She is taking Serc for headache. Her doctor stopped it a while ago and she complained of headache again. I have emailed her doctor and asked about Cannabis. I will let you know when and what he replies.

I was thinking to start with a low dose of CBD oil (3 mg) after her doctor gives a green signal. 3mg dose might be too low but I will gradually increase the dose to see if it helps. Cannabis indeed in very strong in Pakistan but there are different types. I am not sure if all of them are chemically similar.

Hi there. My dad was diagnosed 6 months ago after suffering for years. We started the CBD oil at 0.2 ml 2x per day and increased it 0.1 ml every 3 weeks. He’s currently on 0.5ml as we found effective results. He is able to speak again with a louder voice. His memory is better - not great - still hallucinates somewhat and his overall rigidity is almost gone. He actually stood up on side of bed unassisted now. We also give him the TSH oil in evening to help with pain and sleep. We live in Canada where medicinal is legal and rec is becoming legal soon. Good luck & hugs

Can you tell me how many mg of Cannabinol per ml in the product you are using.

Different companies dilute it with a carrier oil at different levels.

Also he brand you are using. It sounds effective, some brands are less so.

That's really interesting.

They are giving a half life of about 6 hours though that might be cautious their graph looks more like the eight hours I have read of elsewhere.

Interesting too that the price/mg of CBD is almost within a cent or two of the Dutch product I favour.

Yes, I had a discussion with the CEO of a company selling CBD oil here and, form memory, he said that under the tongue is best as the membrane there is very thin and so it gets into the blood more easily and that some thirty percent is lost if it is ingested.

It sounds very effective, I wonder whether the small amount of THC is adding to that.

Anyway it's good to hear that it is working so well.

A lot of people would say that CBD oil helps people diagnosed with PSP. However, there is no scientific evidence for that. Besides, most of the researches proved that CBD oil cannot cure diseases. Still, it has some positive features, such as sedative, painkiller, relaxing. I usually use it for my self and order some on knockoutcbd.com/cbd-product.... My aunt also tried on my nephew, who suffers from PSP, and he sleeps calmly after that. It doesn’t work as a medicine, but at least it helps.

There was a time when we folk here were trying it. There was evidence that it helped with Parkinson's and there is a crossover between that and PSP.

Most folk came back saying that it helped with a sense of wellbeing, but no evidence of more than that.
