At your request Amanda.. Adventures in China

I can only get one photo at a time so hopefully Anne will do better. One chap said he was “All Buddhad Out”. We saw loads and they were all the biggest Buddha. This one was the biggest sitting stone Buddha. If you enlarge the photo you can see steps going up the left side. Anne climbed them with a few others while the rest of us walked by the water and ate ice cream. As it was near the beginning of our time away, I didn’t want my knee to give out and spoil the rest of the holiday. We also saw:- the biggest wooden standing Buddha, the biggest bronze sitting Buddha, the biggest jade reclining Buddha, the biggest marble Buddha and several other BIG Buddhas.

It was interesting though as until my holiday, I didn’t know much about the Buddhist religion. We went to lots of temples and saw many folk praying to Buddha, surrounded by tourists. Smoke from the incense filled the air around the temples as every worshipper lit incense sticks, some as thick as broom handles.

The first day of our time away was very hot but we had drizzley rain for the next two days, here and on the Great Wall. It was still warm though.

Bed time now so more later.

such a great picture. It must have been an awesome experience. Maybe one day, I will be able to visit some places, hopefully not before I get too old. Was this a specialized tour?

It was Just You. A company specialising in holidays for people travelling alone. There are several others that do the same.

I love the sensory description - the incense - I remember that from Buddhist temples in Thailand :-)

How was the food? What did you eat? - Or save that for another picture post!!

I loved the food. When we got there someone who was on her way home said she never wanted to see another Chinese meal as long as she lived. I thought that strange, why go to China if you don’t like Chinese food. Although I didn’t say that, I can understand where she was coming from. Breakfast was a huge buffet. We could have a full English, Continental including lots of pastries or Chinese, which had rice noodles, soup, sweet and sour, loads of meat and fish dishes. For breakfast I mainly had the full English. Breakfast at our hotel in Thailand was very similar so you may have had the same when you were there.

Lunch and dinner consisted of up to 15 different dishes. I preferred them to the takeaways we get in the U.K. a great variety, very tasty and well cooked. There was always a lot of amusement at the tables as folk restyled with chop sticks. Some did ask for forks. 30 years ago I had instructions from Chinese missionaries in a care home I worked in, so since then have always used them to eat Chinese food. I went all the way to China to experience my first Subway sandwich, bought for us by the guide at the Great Wall and on one plane journey when we were told we would not like the food served on our journey. She was correct, we didn’t. 😝.

I’ll post a photo soon.

NannaB,

Thanks and keep the travel journal coming. I enjoy the distraction from everyday issues by seeing and hearing about your trip

It is heartwarming to me to see something good, your friendship, come from this terrible disease.

Thanks,

Bobby
