Morning all.

My mother started on the above Friday & I've just had a call from her carer. She said she has messed herself a couple of times, feels ill,can hardly talk ,can hold herself up even less than normal etc.. Has anyone else has similar experiences? I know there are bound to be side effects to start with, but I'm not sure they are worth it for this.

Hi there Sonic47 !

The rule of thumb for any med is to stop them if they cause adverse effects. Doctors will prescribe certain meds approved for specific diagnoses in hopes that they might help patients with similar symptoms who have other diagnoses. It is purely trial and error. Meds with applications for certain afflictions can sometimes be helpful with others but this is not always the case at all. Unfortunately most health care practitioners don't verbalize this information enough to their patients. They assume that the populace will be aware of the universal guidelines . I have at least half a dozen meds that were prescribed in hopes of decreasing certain symptoms that my sister ( with PSP ) has, that were shelved after only one day of use because that particular med caused a worsening of symptoms or created another problem !!

Wouldn't it be great if the pharmacy would refund the cost to the patient !! Reading up on suggested or prescribed meds is also advisable so you can learn what you need to know and are aware of the side effects/adverse effects that can occur. It is also entirely possible for an individual to experience problems unique to them ! The doctor is not on the scene with you, and you and your mother are in a much better position to know what's happening than they are ! Just note what the results were with that particular med so you know what to report to the doctor and so that it won't accidentally be prescribed in future. Looking into complementary approaches can also be beneficial ! There are a host of suggestions on this site which can be very encouraging and well worth trying, including all of the latest contributions regarding CBD oil which for anyone here in the US and maybe in the UK now ? Is also available by prescription. Kevin provided us on this site with a great deal of specific info about it if you are interested.

Wishing you and your Mom the best and know that you are capable of having a really positive influence !

Take care,

Elise

Glad to hear you have stopped them. It maybe she has something else going on like an infection but better to stop a new med when this happens after starting.

Mum did try Baclofen and it didn't agree with her either. She hasnt been able to tolerate many drugs at all but that is part of the disease also.

Hope the situation improves for her very soon.

Hi Sonic,

Sympathy to you and your mum for such a poor experience :-( We haven't any exp. with the drug but I was looking at historic posts and see a real mix of reactions: a lot of "no difference - no improvement" a few "seemed to help" and some negatives.... Sounds hit and miss, and you just have to do what you did - try it and judge for yourselves.

Better luck soon I hope!

My wife has been on Baclofen for 4 years and no problems except that I found 3 doses a day made her extremely drowsy. So I just give morning and evening doses20ml (liquid) via NGtube and this keeps her relaxed without excessive drowsiness.

Hi Sonic47!

In our case, the problem is constipation.

Perhaps it is a season viric problem that resolves in a couple of days with traditional treatment but continues with moderate discomfort during a week approximately.

Hugs.

Luis
