Sunny Devon!!

Who would have thought it sunny Devon turned into Winter wonderland . Two days ago my hanging baskets were ablaze with colour , winter flowering pansies in full bloom and now they look like miniature ice cream cones .Oh did it snow yesterday , it certainly did ,relentlessly and then last night it froze . I ventured out this morning to find a large tray in my shed , Millie my cat, refuses to go out and has been sitting with crossed paws looking increasingly desperate . Fortunately hidden away in the deep recesses of a cupboard is a bag of cat litter so I filled the tray and placed said cat upon it . She gave me a filthy look as if to say you don’t expect me to go in there and departed upstairs in a huff .

The snow has now got a crisp topping to it after the freeze and it is like walking across a giant Christmas cake with the ice breaking off in great big chunks . Eastern Ceder who is used to vast volumes of snow where she lives in the States would be laughing if she could see the total turmoil we are thrown into when we get barely a foot of snow.

One thing I do love is the muffled silence the snow brings just for a while you can imagine what it would have been like living over a hundred years ago - no cars ,no tractors , no planes just the natural sounds of the world around us .

Even the light in the house is different white reflected off the snow.I expect I shall enjoy it for a few days more and then I will be stir crazy and dying to get out .

One thing I am waiting for is for the phone to go with an offer of help for the elderly and vulnerable and I shall ask them if they could provide me with a toboggan - I can’t seem to find mine !

You bring smiles to the saddest faces, it is just as you say a Winter Wonderland, only hardly any snow where I am - Haywards Heath, West Sussex ! ! Roads gritted and pavements all clear, great for the elderly. The WRVS may have some toboggans hidden away for this type of weather in their stock rooms - try ringing them and asking ! !! Keep warm, well and smiling. Jingles

Poor cat! Poor flowers!

I love those things you describe, George, the silence and the way snow changes the light inside, the cake walking, too! The news from your way makes me grateful more than ever for our plows and sand trucks!

We are getting rain here, but not as much as to the south and west, where a huge wind, rain and snowstorm is expected to cause massive disruption from western NY to the Atlantic coast from DC to Boston today. What will 'normal weather' look like in the future to people who are children now?

Thanks for the smiles, George. Much appreciated. I wish I could come over with my toboggan!

Love,

Easterncedar

Oh Georgepa, I’ve Been waiting for another wonderful description of your lovely county. Thank you for reminding me to take notice of the little details, light, sound or lack of it and that feel beneath my feet as I scrunch out to feed the birds. Our snow arrive with a soft flurry on Monday but by the time I opened my curtains on Tuesday all I could see of my car on the drive were the wheels and a tiny bit of aerial coming up for air. It reached 6 inches deep on the flat by Thursday, deeper where it has drifted but today, although bitterly cold, so far the snow has stayed away. All the cars that left my road on Tuesday have yet to return. The steep hill, the only road to our estate, meant they are all parked along the flat main road. We haven’t seen any gritters here so I’m praying the rain forecast for Saturday night does come or I won’t be going to the lunchtime meal at a posh hotel, booked by a friend for his birthday party. Two of my grandsons in Brighton are very disappointed as they have only had a sprinkling and 1 half day off school when our village children have been sledging, snowboarding and building snowmen and igloos all week. My other two grandsons are with their parents on holiday.......skiing in Switzerland 😆.

Keep warm Georgepa and I’ll eagerly await your post when Spring finally arrives.

Lots of love and a warm hug.

I'm going stir crazy as well. The dog is like your cat, permanently crossed legged. Have just come in from taking him out, had to put him in a warm bath afterwards. The snow was caked to his fur. Was funny watching him sink into the drifts though!

Lots of love

Lovely description, George. Same view from my windows. Although I live in London, I live in a cul-de-sac looking onto a common. Not far from Blackheath, which I recall you know. Watching the children and dog walkers has been like watching a Lowry painting. About 6 inches - but now the wind is blowing it around and all fun seems to have gone - looks more like Siberia.

I'm old, but not 100 , and I remember as a child in Yorkshire, the silence and walking in the snow and only hearing the crunch.

Hope you;re ok.

Very much my old stomping ground - I taught in Deptford and we lived in Quentin Road the other side of the Heath towards Lewisham . Many a happy time spent in Blackheath Village and in Greenwich Park ; after living in Islington it seemed like a green oasis in London and then we moved to Devon !!

I'm kind of ok if you can be ok when you miss someone every minute of every day but that's part of the course isn't it . xx

Thanks for your lovely post George we all enjoy and look forward to hearing from you. I expect your cat is looking forward to the thaw so the he/she can resume a normal cat life, they don't appreciate the disruption to their ordered life! I know I've had enough of the white stuff now and am itching for springtime, winter has been far too long in my eyes.

Await your next descriptive post George, hopefully to welcome the springtime.

Sending warm wishes

Love Kate xxx
