Keeping the shirts dry

My mom and I are at a loss for how to keep my dad's shirts dry from the constant drool. He's on Meds which lessen the amount of drool, he's just unable to swallow much anymore. We had a bib on him for a couple of hours tonight and STILL had to change his shirt. My mom is so worried he's going to catch pneumonia from his shirt staying wet. Has anyone found a solution to this? Please no advice related to medicines, we're not going down that route

I have to ask you, can you either of you sew on a sewing machine. I ask this because maybe there is a material that you can sew on the back of a towel that would keep the wetness from going through the towel and you can just rest it on your Dad so it doesn't look like a bib, I am sure all of you don't want that. towel you can just have it rest there.

I would go to a store that sells material I know Walmart sells material.

Maybe if you know anyone that works at a hospital or other places like that you could ask them what is used. Your situation can't be only

Just a thought, good luck.

I'm trying to think of ideas. Dad's not at that stage yet so I'll be interested to hear what others have to say.

The thing that pops into mind is what they do at the hairdresser - a soft towel at the neck that's sort of snug against the skin (or at least right against the skin). I'm not describing it adequately, but many people here will probably know what I mean. It's not perfect tho.

(Edited to add...)

Another product that might be able to be adapted is from Lunapads - lunapads.com/lunapadsblanket - there's a waterproof lining in this, as in other of their products, and it or something like it might absorb the drool and lee a soft and dry layer close to the skin. (They're lovely people who might be able to recommend something else).

Dont have an answer for you. But suggest multiple layers may be a solution. And bear in mind that wool is warm, whether wet or dry! Maybe a wool clothing protector next to shirt then you can replace wet one with dry and he still keeps warm.

Ok it's me again if you could get a clear shower curtain and get it to fit then sew it just thinking.

That's an idea and my mom is great with a sewing machine. My fear is that it will work the same as the regular bib did tonight.

My husband doesn't drool too much yet.

When one of my babies was drooling I put a waterproof bib under his jumper, on top of his vest. This stopped wet getting through. Then you can use a towel but know he isn't soaking through.

1 Try using disposable plactic or washable bibs.

2. a tea towel or such held in place by a peg or bag clip at the back.

I know it sounds odd but Margaret drool varied through the day I bought breast feeding muslin cloths to wrap round her neck/chin and changed position regularly also the feeding bibs from local disability store. The muslin absorbed most of the saliva while the bib protected her clothes. Have your dr check if Glycoperonpium could be used it will work for a few months and can be increased up to 8 a day which takes about a year to reach when it no longer works and can be withdrawn. Does have side effects so read the instruction leaflet and watch out for them Margaret was not affected but it gave us relief for a year.

Best wishes Tim

Yes . I haven't got a cure but I have found another use for puppy pads ,

As well as using them on the bed and the chair , I cut them into either two or four and tuck them into his shirt . It's waterproof but very light and affirable to be able to thro in the bin .

John wears a foam neck support collar and I tuck one in there .

John is oartIfularly bad today I have had to use two at a time , I worry he will become dehydrated

My husband has worn waterproof backed bibs for years indoors obtained from either Essentialaids.com or ageukmobilityaids.co.uk. These companies have brochures as well which you can order through.. In a couple of weeks he is having botox injections which I really hope will help. Jenny

The puppy pads cut up are so much easier and they go into the bag of waste the council pick up for bodily waste

Not sure if you have found a solution, but I bought a waterproof backed bib that is very long from Walmart.com and it works great, along with a package of several terry cloth bibs. You could also purchase a waterproof haircutting cape from Sally's beauty supply and then put a terry cloth bib over that. The idea of cutting puppy pads is also a great suggestion. I buy most of our incontinent products on Sam's Club's website...depends, large size wipes, large waterproof pads that are used in his wheelchair and hospital bed (you could cut these and use as bibs) all very affordable and free shipping. Good luck.
