New to the group! Blood in urine

Hello everyone!

I had my prostate removal surgery on March 19th. The last couple of days I have had blood in my urine, which surprised me because up to this point there has been none. 5 weeks post op. I go in tomorrow for my post op and lab work and will talk to the doctor about it. Has anyone else had this happen? So glad to have found this group, I'm struggling a bit with sex and the lack of function at this point!

Thanks

Davey

Hello Davey, Im really glad you are seeing your doc tomorrow. Seems not a great issue and urgent to have your doc diagnose. Glad you found this greatly supportive and resourceful group. There are alot of guys here who are very supportive and have a wealth of knowledge and experience re prostrate cancer treatment. Take care, Tim.

Hey Tim, thanks for the quick response to my post and making me feel welcome! I have a lot of confidence in my surgeon and the medical staff at City of Hope where I had my surgery but as a gay man, I’ve had a lot of questions pertaining to my lifestyle which I haven’t felt comfortable asking. Mind you my main concern up to this point has been to get the treatment and recovering from surgery. Now that I’m hopefully through the woods on that score Im ready to start expolring my new reality and the possibilities!

All the best

Davey

Hi Davey. I am glad you found this site to share your thoughts. 5 weeks post-op is still very early in the healing process...you will evolve in the coming weeks, months, etc. . Give yourself more time to heal. In addition to regular follow ups with my urologist, I also see another doctor on his team who focuses on post-op incontinence and ED. I am hoping you also have a medical consult to discuss these issues and help you along the way. Good luck with your doctor appt. Hope all goes well !

Thanks for the response!

I will ask my Doctor tomorrow about a plan for addressing my ed. He does know that I’m gay and that I am married to a man. I guess it is on me to be proactive with him, I will know more tomorrow, maybe he will surprise me! I’m very happy to have found this group. How long have you been recovering?

Best

Hi Davey --- I am 5 months post surgical and cancer-free :) . Note: When I first met with the ED/Incontinence doctor. he started talking that I may have future challenges with vaginal penetration....I told him that wasn't even an issue with me...and, THAT's how we got on the right track about my sexual lifestyle...LOL. Lucklily, my doctor works with a wide variety of patients, so I am in good hands and talk freely with him. One of the best pieces of advice I have received on his site was that just because you no longer have a prostate doesn't mean you have to give up on having fun. I am happy to report that I, am indeed, having fun!

Thanks for that. I sometimes see this as an adventure and at other times I’m overwhelmed by the feeling of it’s never going to be the same again. It’s early days I suppose and I appreciate hearing from others and of their experiences. I might press you for more details but will do so in private message!

Xo

Hi Davey -- Sure thing, and again, you are welcome. You truly seem to have a very good handle on things and practical in your thinking. I have had my share of overwhelming moments...luckily, they don't last long and I focus more on that life is ever-changing and we evolve and adjust -- and really, nothing ever stays the same if you think about it. . I like that you are looking at it as an adventure, and I feel similar -- it's like discovering a new-normal for yourself. For me, it has been enlightening and a wake-up call to live the best life I can. Feel free to reach out to me at any time! Friendly Hugs.

P.S. And yes, it is very IMPORTANT that your medical consult understand your lifestyle. I was open with my doctor about being gay so he understood my issues and concerns. You will enjoy discovering the new possibilities that await you!

Hi Davey,

I had surgery 2,5 weeks ago, so very close to you.

I had a few drops of blood when starting peeing just after I removed catheter. Around 5 weeks and this was gone.

As others have said this is a great place for sharing experiences. You can check my notes to see how I am doing. Any different from you?

I got back to work and my problem struggle so far is to get to a 100% continence. How is yours?

Let us know how the appoitment with your doctor goes!

Take care,

Paulo

Hey Paulo,

Nice to meet you! I have been reading your theead with great interest! My continence is a lot better 5 weeks in. It was never a major problem for me but the first couple weeks i wore pads and at night i wore a depends because i toss and turn quite a bit at night and i found the pad to be problematic to keep in position! I am not using the pad during the day now at all and its been fine, no leakage. Ocasionally if I cough or sneeze but even that has dissipated. I’m just careful to pay attention. I still sleep with the depends but I’m not sure i even need it, just a confidence thing for me. I may try without soon.

How is your energy level? 2 and 1/2 weeks after surgery i was still pretty low energy. Feeling more like myself now, except for the stranger in my pants that doesnt respond to my advances!

I’ll let you know what the doc says today.

Hey Davey,

For me the nights are quite in terms of continence. I am and I have always been dry. During day, yestaerday was great, but today I had already some leakages and I have been at home. So frustrating... Hoping time to bring this to the right place soon.

I never felt tired honestly... I actually wished I could do more and not having to rest so much :-)

As for "the stranger in my pants" :-) also no response ... I had orgasms though but different from before. At least the mind responds all right.

Good luck for later,

Paulo

Similar story then Davey, no grandchild yet :-) I am not married to the man of my life yet, but living with him week yes week no. He has similar situation as mine and we share upbringing of kids with respective mothers on a weekly basis. In the week we don't have kids we live together.

I will be with Nuno for 5 years in next September.
