Any avid cyclists out there? I'd like to resume when permitted (I've been told 3 months), but I have a question about saddles and bike setup. On a standard road saddle you're generally putting a lot of force on the perineum. (There's some controversy as to whether this is a risk factor for PC, but the evidence is weak and contradictory). I assume there is a little less "meat" over the bearing area, and wonder if anyone has had to make concessions after RP. Are there any road saddles that I should look for if I have a problem? Has anyone needed to change their riding position?

Thanks!~

There's no less meat between skin and bone - the prostate is pretty much internal - but I had issues, with pelvic floor pain. Since I commute to work by bike, for a while I rode an eBike that I didn't have to pedal. I started that at 2 months. I've since had a penile implant, which doesn't like a standard seat. The noseless Hobson Easyseat works very well for me. amazon.com/Hobson-Easyseat-...

I've even taken it on an overseas holiday and fitted it to hired and borrowed bikes.

It's not as efficient as a standard seat, but there's no perineal pressure or abrasion at all.

My brother tried an early iteration of the easy seat (probably over 35 years ago). At that time it had a longer bearing area extending forward from the pivot points and it cut into his hamstrings. This may be worth trying, and I'm glad it works for you--thanks!

I can't remember how long it was before I biked again, but I was already using a split seat before surgery and continued to use one afterwards. I don't have any new comfort problems, but two different things different than before do happen. 1)sometimes when I get off the bike I get a partial erection, usually not enough for anyone else to notice, and 2) sometimes (not always but usually the same times) after I get off the bike the urge to piss is stronger than it used to be. Must be something about the relieving of some pressure when I get off the bike.....

So many saddles seem to have relief in the center. When you say "split seat", what saddle are you using? Is it something like the Easy Seat mentioned by MelbourneDavid above?

it's more just like a slit down the middle--is his kind supposed to be better? it's time to replace mine, anyway, so if something else is supposed to be better it would be good to know--none of the guys at the bikestore are much help, they're are nineteen or so.....

A lot of it is personal preference. MelbourneDavid supplied a link. I've never tried the Easyseat, and as I mentioned my brother did long ago and he didn't like it--but the design looks like it changed so it may be worth considering. But my main concern is pressure over the surgical site and a split saddle might work just as well. I only had my surgery 3 weeks ago tomorrow, and they don't want me riding before 3 months, which will bring me into winter. If I have to try a few to find one that works, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Not really surprisingly, I'm not the only one to have had these issues (not by a long shot!). I found a long blog, with activity on a prostatectomy/cycling post that is still active after 10 years.
