A cooking afternoon

โ€ข34 Replies

Hi all

I tried a Spelt bread recipe from the IBS Network and the first one failed and I thought it would as the recipe didn't look right. I wrote to the Network and they were absolutely amazing and worked on the recipe and updated it, they had a Gastro Dietician working on it. The results are in the photo and they speak for themselves, it worked really well.

So I thought, as I'd made something for me why not make something for hubby that he'd been asking me to make for a while now and that is a plain jam sponge, so it's been an afternoon in the kitchen.

Enjoy your evening/afternoon all.

It was really good of you to follow up Alicia as it's such a waste of ingredients for so many people, if it isn't working out. And, as you say, really good that the IBS Network worked with you to get it right! Those loaves and your cake look 100% delicious!

Thank you Sue and yes had to throw the first attempt into the food caddy. I had to try it out first even though I thought the recipe looked wrong. I was then able to contact the Network as I'd tried to make it. They really were excellent in getting back to me.

Thank you, hubby is happy with the sponge and I'm happy with the bread, it's a win win.๐Ÿ™๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜‹

You've cracked it for sure!! Fantastic. I make loaves with half white, half spelt and they come out really well. Know you couldn't use the white though. Yesterday put crushed walnuts in dough and toasted seseme seeds. Then slice loaf and into the freezer as I only eat 3 half pieces per week. But nice for hubby. Also made blueberry muffins. ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹ I lurv baking but only for the freezer and family next door!!

in reply to diana1998

Thank you Diana. Your loaves sound really lovely and putting in crushed walnuts and toasted sesame seeds sounds like a fabulous idea, what a lovely flavour that would be. It really is a shame that you cannot eat more of your lovely bread but I've no doubt hubby is very happy eating his share. Sounds like your freezer is certainly used well and I bet the family next door as more than happy.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜Š

All works well and have only bought 1 loaf of cheap white for the birds since 1st lockdown. It's a great hobby and very satisfying when bread turns out well Alicia which you'll understand! Your sponge cake looks fabulous too. Lucky hubby ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ‘

That's really good that you've only bought one cheap loaf since 1st lockdown, I'm trying to get hubby out of the white bread and I have to say he's now started on the wholemeal and I'm going to make him bread as well. Thank you, he really enjoyed it.๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ‘

These look gorgeous. I am quite envious.

I cannot eat spelt, but am enjoying playing with gluten, maize and chickpea-free bread recipes. Generally they do not rise well. So, I am trying it out with the bread maker to see if that helps. Wish me luck!

in reply to BrentW

Thank you Brent, much appreciated.

I'm so sorry you can't eat spelt and I wish you well in making gluten free bread recipes. I agree they don't rise as well but they can still taste good. Have you seen the gluten free bread recipes that Hidden shares, they are awesome.

Best of luck with the breadmaker.

The bread maker was a success, CF! The bread rose far better than in my handmade recipes, and the loaf even looks like a loaf. Shame I am too full to pork and sweet potato to take a slice for a trial run.

in reply to BrentW

Yay, that's fantastic to hear Brent. Please let me know what it's like when you are able to try it.

Well done๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Š๐ŸŒˆ

Your bread looks wonderful makes my mouth water for a taste. What is Spelt bread? I've never heard of it. I am in Kentucky, USA thanks Mary

in reply to kycmary

Thank you Mary, it really did turn out well. Spelt flour, which you use to make the bread, is an ancient grain, here's a link explaining what it is. It really does taste good.
