Christmas

I am not a Christmas person. However, this year I will be away from my mom and sisters due to restrictions. It made me realize what Christmas really is for me and I would like to be there and sing Christmas carols, hug my mom and tell them how much I love being a part of this family. Any advice not to end the year drinking alone?

Our church has carols in the church yard tomorrow, perhaps you could join those near you.

The first thing I'd say Nanodoce is to make a firm determination not to spend the end of the year drinking alone. It solves nothing, will make you feel ill and won't resolve the problem. We are bombarded by commerce to believe that we must have company at Christmas. This is of course complete nonsense. In any other week of the year you'd be perfectly happy to spend a couple of days on your own, but we are led to believe that it's almost criminal to be spending time on our own for Christmas.

This year, more than any other, you will be in the company of hundreds of thousands world-wide who will not be able to do what they usually do.

Of course you'd like to be with family. But your family will still love you. You will still love them. And in 24-48 hours (according to where you are), the whole thing will be over. Done again for another year.

So think of ways to fill your time alone doing things you really like. Music, movies, the internet, snacks, a few festive drinks, but be happy. The vital thing is that you are still here. Here hopefully to go on to 2021 and along with your family, survive this worldwide crisis and be here to go on loving your family.

Resolve not to be miserable and that way you won't be. If you can, connect with your family by phone and social media, and, if not, just remember them in your heart. You can do it and it will make you feel stronger when you've got through it!

Yes, Yes, Yes, Callendersgal! Years ago I determined that I could either throw a lengthy pity for myself for being alone on a holiday or......I could make that special day a time of doing lovely, out-of-the-ordinary things that I wouldn't be able to do otherwise.

Planning a special meal, indulging in small treats, giving thanks for having others to love and be loved by even if not with them physically....it can be the day or time you choose to make it. Instead of feeling miserable, we can single out this day to reflect on what we have to celebrate all year round.

Thank you for writing this very wise post, Callendersgal.

WhatsApp has been so good for me and my family and friends to share! I have been at home having a meal and my daughter and her family at their home and had shared meal with chatting and being able to feel so close 😊💕🎄🎅🏻

On new year's eve, we will be walking over to our friends' street with our own bubbley and glasses, just to see them outside and toast from a distance. I believe that in our street quite a few people will put their heads out and wish everyone a Happy New Year. Not like having a party, but definitely at least some sort of physical connection.

I call friends who I know are alone and on boxing day we are meeting at the local park with our dog. I have my husband, but I am only in contact with my brother. My sister stopped talking to us when my mum died. I hope the weather is dry, if not we will all get wet🐶🐶

Ask around and see if the Food Banks or Soup kitchens want a hand this year in helping the homeless. Many regular helpers will likely be out of action due to the pandemic.

If you feel you can't face it, have a day of fasting and meditation instead.
