Hi hicaz

You have probably been issued with a blue steroid card (available from your GP or pharmacy, if not) but you do need to tell your dentist that you are taking steroids. Also, if you are taking Alendronic Acid (often prescribed alongside the steroids to protect bones from the risk of osteoporosis, it is very important that your dentist knows, as there is a small risk of jaw necrosis from such medications. If extractions are needed, then dentists often prefer patients on AA to be referred to hospital.

Thanks Celtic gave dentist detail of meds. Fortunately no extractions needed yet just 2x half hour sessions of deep cleaning.

Glad to hear that you did not need too much treatment.

My dentist has a large sign in his waiting room stressing the importance of patients informing him of all medication which they are taking. I always tell him and let him judge what he needs to know. He was particularly interested in the AA and said to consult him in the unlikely event of developing any jaw pain. At each consultation his nurse always notes down the current medication and the dose of each one.

I find the fact that he is so interested in my general health and medications very reassuring.

Hello hicaz,

I told my Dentist - and he knew more about the illness than I did at the time!!!

He is very thorough, and always asks about my medical history and takes my blood pressure at every visit, so it is worth mentioning as it is important to your care.
