Is anyone able to claim DLA because of PMR? My claim was closed in the recent cuts pre-diagnosis and I wonder if it could be reinstated?
Hi JC. Here at PMRGCAuk we don't know of many people who have been successful with DLA for polymyalgia rheumatica, although there are one or two. It's difficult to say, because a relatively small proportion of people with PMR are of working age. However, we do fall within the legal criteria for having a chronic condition that affects our mobility,and so I would say that it is always worth pursuing. Thanks Kate, Funnily enough I looked online today and saw that I could re-apply that way, so I have submitted my application. I will certainly let you know the outcome. Thanks for wishing me luck....
i get dla and high rate mobility i do have gca too and have developed diabetes and cataracts from the steroids but appeal if they turn you down x

Bit confused by this reply Kate - DLA has nothing to do with 'working age' - it is for children & adults up to 65. It also has nothing to do with ability or inability to work (and also being in receipt of DLA entitles people to the Disability Component of Working Tax Credit).
Disability Living Allowance is awarded solely on the basis of the 'care' and 'mobility' needs that an illness or disability generates rather than ability to work. I realise that may sound a bit contradictory, but for example, a wheel chair user may need help dressing, showering and have mobility problems so would probably be entitled to DLA. That person may however be able to work. DLA is not taxable or means tested either.

Hoorah! I just got my DLA award letter through the post today. I am being awarded the lower rate mobility and care allowance. The decision was made on my claim form and GP input. Thank goodness, however, PMR is not the only issue I have, I do have other medical conditions (don't we all) and the combination I believe has helped me to get financial assistance. Hope this helps others too.
