I am not an epidemiologist.Might it be that Shielders are more likely to display symptoms and more likely to die, whereas others infected may be healthy enough to show no symptoms- and not be tested- and survive?

Do we yet know anything about how much more likely steroid users are to be unprotected/ have less protection even after 2 vaccines?

I think some analysis has been done but as far as I can see it is a bit woolly.

Was just reading it too - and thinking it was rather strange. But they were probably a lot more likely to be tested in the early days because if they did get it they probably had symptoms whereas the low risk people maybe didn't have the typical symptoms that we now know were the tip of the iceberg. Here our local lab guy said to us in the first week of March that he reckoned at least half of patients had no symptoms - so wouldn't have been tested in the UK. That was where it went pearshaped, so many people wandering around spreading to all and sundry. And there were all those elderly people in care homes and in hospital - sitting ducks waiting to be infected.

It is quite thought provoking.

I remember Angela Merkel saying, in the early days, "Test, test, test!"

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to 123-go

Italy was saying it too - and in subsequent waves it has worked in our region. But masks have been mandatory inside and where I live, the locals are still wearing them. Tourists - sod them - not so much ... But as soon as someone is positive the tracing and testing and isolation is very good

I think PMR Pro has it. so many people had it and weren't tested and brought it in to shielders... in homes.. I suspect those shielding themselves and not buying groceries or seeing anyone did fairly well.

I am aware of many people, especially in areas of deprivation, who were sent shielding letters but simply could not isolate themselves because they lived in multi generational housing, had no access (or couldn’t use) technology, therefore couldn’t access online shopping etc. Many felt so lonely that they simply had to mix with others in the community or had children who were going to school. These sort of studies are just too generalised and prove nothing and I wouldn’t believe anything written in the Telegraph!

The study was predominantly done in Glasgow and surrounding areas - where everything you say applies. Poverty - and high heidyins you haven't a clue how real people live, NHS or not.

Well herself won't be using it will she? Perhaps a certain person who is so keen thinks he can use it for his jollies - even I'd prefer it to his tent last year ...

I understand it may be a Welsh holiday stunt this year and not a Highland one again, thank goodness.

A big step from a tent to a million pound yacht! I thought a caravan to a B and B was a big deal. 😀

Give me the caravan any day!!!!

PS - MULTI million - allegations today it could be quarter of a BILLION ...

I have been quite ill for the last two weeks with a very severe chest infection and an now on my second course of different antibiotics. This was defo NOT Covid as I have had two PCR tests, and have presented differently. However my lovely doctor has said that we shielded people are now very vulnerable to all the different and nasty respiratory bugs that are starting to go around and will continue to do so from now through autumn and winter.

He says even people who were not shielding, because of eighteen months of lockdown, will be very open to these infections and have low immunity to them.

Quite a worry!

piglette profile image
piglette in reply to Smokygirl

It seems because we were wearing masks and were not mixing with people we have been protected against bugs, so going out again they will be in bug heaven on getting at us.

Smokygirl profile image
Smokygirl in reply to piglette

A real “bugger” then!!! 🤣

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to piglette

All the more reason to keep wearing a mask ...

Smokygirl profile image
Smokygirl in reply to PMRpro

You are quite right as usual PRO. I have been so meticulously careful for 18 months and never been anywhere at all but just over two weeks ago I went into John Lewis in town. My first time back in town! I wore a mask but stupidly tried a few summer tops on in the dressing rooms. It was very hot in there and I took the mask off. There were other people in there and just curtains. I was there for half an hour. I became ill two days later with a really horrid sore throat which progressed into the bad chest infection. Thank heavens it is not Covid, but still, it really is dangerous out there and you did warn us all! Xxxx

I think it is probably worse than last year in a lot of ways. There will be loads of people out there who think it's all over, their 2 doses of vaccine mean they won't get it so can behave as they like, Which patently isn't true - the infections after 2x jabbed are being seen - and how many are so mild they don't know but are still shedding the delta variant? Andrew Marr caught Covid at the G7 - 2 negative lateral flows and then a positive PCR.My daughter had an elderly patient in A&E the other night - just PUO (fever) and confused. Ill enough to be admitted and the PCR which must be done for admission was POSITIVE. The lateral flow tests are very hit and miss - and I suspect even more so in people who have had their jabs.

piglette profile image
piglette in reply to PMRpro

It is the ones who have not had jabs and don’t intend to have them that are really worrying. A friend reckons they don’t bother to wear masks either. I have an anti vaxxer friend who believes all the rubbish about being injected with tracking devices etc.

PMRpro profile image

Until they get up close and personal with a ventilator ... By which time it is probably too late.

piglette profile image
piglette in reply to PMRpro

They keep putting things in the Mirror giving their last words, “if only I had had a jab”.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to piglette

So I gather. Burst of enthusiasm here when they discovered they won't be allowed all sorts of places without proof of vaccination. You don't HAVE to be jabbed - you can just stay at home.

piglette profile image
piglette in reply to PMRpro

I think it is quite a good threat, even if they won’t be allowed to go through with it. Looks like Macron is though.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to piglette

Why not? Rome can make it law ...

piglette profile image
piglette in reply to PMRpro

Too true. I think airlines will start to ask for vaccines soon too.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to piglette

Think I saw a mention of that in the Guardian or on FB today

piglette profile image
piglette in reply to PMRpro

That is interesting, some companies are starting to say people must be vaccinated too. My anti vaxxer friend loves travelling, should be interesting if she get a jab.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to piglette

Claims being made that some are going for a jab in disguise!!

Just looked - Pakistan won't allow travel for non-vaccinated. Israel has evidence the protection fades so are introducing boosters for over 60s. Healthcare workers here are suspended if they aren't vaccinated.

UK is pussyfooting around because of human rights and freedom to do what the hell you like.

YuliK profile image
YuliK in reply to PMRpro

Yes it’s true, a 3rd booster is recommended in Israel for the elderly and vulnerable.

But the 3rd vaccination has not yet been approved by the FDA. So nobody can really tell if there will be serious side affects.

All a bit scary.

PMRpro profile image

No - but they would complain about anything!!! I was surprised when our Leader said he was following Rome - nice get out for him when he approves of the idea but we know the "strange parties" don't ;) "Not my fault ..."

I absolutely don't have a problem with it - you still have a choice ...

Surely the real victims are going to be the little ones who haven't been getting their annual dose of immune system strengthening exposure to bugs? We oldsters have hundreds of those under our belt already, which is why many of us hardly ever catch colds any more, or only mildly.

That is what they are saying. I suppose people who Detox all their kids toys all the time don’t help either.

So sorry to hear you are poorly. All those bugs going around had better not land on us after all the care we've taken. We must continue to take extra care.I hope you soon soon recover from the chest infection: it must be draining for you.

Thank you so much! It is tiring coughing up the horrid stuff! Hopefully this second lot of antibiotics will help get rid of it all. I am just so grateful that it’s not Covid! Xxx

Seems to me what this must actually mean - sloppy if so - is CEV people instructed to shield but who couldn't for various social reasons. Bcs otherwise it's nuts. If you actually shielded you had virtually no contact with anyone so couldn't have got infected. I did. I live alone. Totality in one year: delivery folks at considerably more than arm's length, cabbies + GP practice for routine bloods every 2 m + one OPD appt and one CT.
