Diet - my story so far!

When diagnosed with PMR...within 2 months I was diagnosed prediabetic. I was already overweight from steroids for lung issues a few years ago, and hadn't been able to shift the excess. I went onto the keto diet, while on 15mg steroids. I lost a stone in 7 weeks but as soon as I stopped it it went back on then another stone on top. I found it hard as it meant I generally ate different food from my husband, so the easy make 2 ham rolls for a quick lunch, became two different items!! I reversed the prediabetes within 2 months, and have had blood tests since and all has been OK. I didn't diet again for 11 months, and two stone just went on..I swear it goes on without me eating anything!! I am currently on the 5:2 diet and lost three quarters of a stone in 8 weeks but this is easier on the mind & on the meal planning and purchasing food, and I can eat a lot of the same things as husband! Keto was harder due to no carbs at all whereas with 5:2 I am eating some carbs on 5 days a week and choosing to be very low carb as well as low calorie on 2 days a week. On the 'fasting' days you know you only have to make it through that day and you can then

have a treat on some of the other days! I think I will probably need to be on 5:2 for a year, and then perhaps 6:1 for life, if I want to carry on having treats like ice cream in the summer, and bread and cake and biscuits sometimes!

So do I but wish my tenacity would last longer! I’ve been dieting since I was 17. My nickname at school was Tubbs. I’m only five foot tall and reckon if I was about 6 feet I’d be slimmer! Thanks, S x

Mind you when we were in Austria climbing up a mountain it was getting hotter and hotter and my mother explained it to us “we are closer to the sun!!”

Er - she was correct: the radiant heat from the sun is greater at altitude because there is less air protecting you

LOL, we were at about 13,000 ft!!!!!!!!! Bit of a difference!

Very nearly...but actually up on a Swiss mountain! I did fly our hot air balloon up to 12,000 feet, that was quite rarefied!

Heading for 4,000m - that is serious altitude ... Have done the Dachstein glacier once (a mere 2,700m) and that was more than enough! Watched teenagers on a skiing trip crawling up the steps from the top of the drag lift to the lift back to the valley.

Yep! We flew our hot air balloon is winter in the Dachstein area. A friend got blown off course and landed on the Dachstein glacier and had to pay £500 for a helicopter air lift! The high altitude didn’t seem to affect me at all, I found it very exhilarating! We went to Switzerland every summer with my parents, they honeymooned there in 1947 and we all loved it. David and I started going after we’d been married a couple of years, summer hiking and winter skiing, just wonderful!

Absolutely! I got very hot hiking in mountains in the summer (and a bit burnt despite factor 50 sun cream). My Dad used to call it ‘rarefied air’!

The 5:2 is working for me too. It's a slow weight loss but the first time I haven't put it all back on. I agree with you I think I will need to keep to this long term. It's flexible too and so easy to adapt to life. My diabetic hubby has joined me too and also lost weight. He's a terror as he loves sweet things :)

Good news! Our husbands must be brothers in the love of sweet things but that’s hard for your husband if he has diabetes! I think it works for me as only two days a week I diet and the rest I can have a treat! It’s the most ‘human’ diet I’ve tried! Thanks, S x

I agree, today was my fast day, tomorrow I can have a treat. Much easier than other types of dieting :)

I went on the LCHF diet and that has worked well for me. I do have the rare treat. It got my type 2 into remission along with lots of walking.

The keto diet month sent my diabetes away! Think it’s just the same as LCHF!

I think technically with keto there is a strict limit to carbs, with LCHF there isn't
