Your rheumy does KNOW you are hypermobile Constance?

He won't accept it - not at my age!!πŸ‘΅πŸ»πŸ€ͺ

What I mean is that that could well account for some of your joint pain - Ehlers-Danlos syndromes.

Oh shoosh!πŸ˜‚ I've got enough illnesses to cope with.πŸ‘΅πŸ»

You can remember that far back?? πŸ€ͺ

It seems to me that when the medical professionals don't know what it is, they call it a syndrome.

DorsetLady profile image

I’m not hyper mobile - but I can still do that - despite replacement knee, hip and shoulder! But I am a bit younger than Constance.

Constance13 profile image

πŸ˜‚ We "oldies" can show them. πŸ’₯

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to DorsetLady

I could do it - not quite with hands flat on the floor though now. But an MSK "specialist" informed me since I could do that and he couldn't, I didn't have back problems!!!

DorsetLady profile image
DorsetLadyPMRGCAuk volunteer in reply to PMRpro

That’s rubbish!

Constance13 profile image
Constance13 in reply to PMRpro

Well he's right really, isn't he? How many people with back problems can touch the floor?

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Constance13

An awful lot! It's hamstrings that stop men touching the floor!

Wonder if he would have said 'hip to knee too long'. I never understood why the osteo guy said that. πŸ€”

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to jinasc

I think there are optimum bone lengths and ratios for joint movement - if the hip to knee length is too long or short it could lead to muscle problems maybe?

jinasc profile image
jinasc in reply to PMRpro

Yes, that is what the Acu guy thought had helped to cause the Piris...............

I never thought about what he said till I read your post.

I was told years ago by a physio no-one should ever be asked to do what Constance is doing.....

Constance13 profile image
Constance13 in reply to Longtimer

Why? You did mean the "bend", didn't you???πŸ˜‚

Longtimer profile image
Longtimer in reply to Constance13

Yes, she said it`s too much strain on the back for anyone to do, thinking about it we would normally bend our knees to pick things up etc....well I would have to....have scoliosis at top of my back (across bra line) and OA in facet joints at base of spine....both painful today, damp conditions!

DorsetLady profile image
DorsetLadyPMRGCAuk volunteer in reply to Longtimer

I had a touch of spondylitis in lumbar region according to last DEXA scan so probably shouldn’t do it, but going down from cat pose (on hands and knees) to β€œsit” on hips in pilates does stretch the back nicely!

Constance13 profile image
Constance13 in reply to DorsetLady

Going down on hands and knees would "cripple" me! Arthritis in hips, knees and wrists.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Constance13

Not arthritis - must be scar tissue but it is like knives unless the surface is VERY soft

DorsetLady profile image
DorsetLadyPMRGCAuk volunteer in reply to PMRpro

Yep!

DorsetLady profile image
DorsetLadyPMRGCAuk volunteer in reply to Constance13

Well as know one new knee and hip...but as PMRpro says floor needs to be cushioned for operated knee - have a padded bench at Pilates....and if I’m at home, cushion!

Longtimer profile image
Longtimer in reply to Constance13

One wonders if there will ever be a cure for Arthritis??

Constance13 profile image
Constance13 in reply to Longtimer

I shouldn't think so! There's no cure for old age and arthritis is just one of the things (I would say most of the time) that can't be cured. And what can't be cured must be endured!

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Longtimer

I can only pick something up by bending like that - bend zee knees is an ability that is long past!

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Longtimer

Funny - my physio asked me to demonstrate that during her assessment!

Longtimer profile image
Longtimer in reply to PMRpro

Dosen`t surprise me....don`t have much faith in Physios to be honest....they all say different things....but then so do Rheumies!.....

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Longtimer

I have to say, the physios here are far better than most I've come across in the NHS

Constance13 profile image
Constance13 in reply to PMRpro

I can get free physio appointments (as you know) but I find I 'hurt' for the next couple of days - so I don't bother.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Constance13

Think you need to give your therapist more feedback - good ones adjust their expectations.

Constance13 profile image
Constance13 in reply to PMRpro

I don't think they really believe I have arthritis because I can move everything so well and I don't swell up too badly. It IS unusual!

Longtimer profile image
Longtimer in reply to Constance13

About two years ago my GP sent me to NHS physio, he said we don't do hands on, we give you exercises to do....must say at that moment I felt like I could put my hands on!!......have had to pay since....after MR I in February was sent exercises by email....have rung her since for advice...her reply, sit in chair and soften your muscles!!!....grrrrr

Francesbarbara profile image
Francesbarbara in reply to Longtimer

When I trained as a physio 60! years ago we were very much 'hands on'. and as far as I am concerned that should still be the case. I am amazed and shocked at the modern idea of handing out of sheets of exercises. You don't need detailed knowledge of anatomy and physiology to do that. We spent ages instructing and checking that exercises were done correctly. Rant over...

Longtimer profile image
Longtimer in reply to Francesbarbara

Absolutely agree, and I had paid to see a Rheumatologist!.....who then instructed her to advise me about exercises for facet joint OA in the lower spine .......but it was emails and a phone call.....shocking....I may as well have gone on youtube!

Longtimer profile image
Longtimer in reply to PMRpro

Perhaps trained differently?.....

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Longtimer

They see you, f2f, and work with you for 3/4 hour, up to 12 sessions. And give you homework - but stuff that is easy to do right at home.

HeronNS profile image

Impressive! I can touch my toes, no problem, but never put my hands flat on the floor like that. This morning I decided not to do my exercises. I crawled out of bed, could hardly walk, knee really bad, my shoulder was killling me and then a foot decided to join the party. Instead I fed the cats then quietly read the comics instead of exercising and felt much better. The sun is shining after days of fog and drizzle so will go out shortly for a little hobble before watching YouTube version of Advent I service.

I guess we still save the Advent calendars for Dec 1st though, don't we? Someone gave me a Pukka Tea Advent calendar!β˜•

Constance13 profile image
Constance13 in reply to HeronNS

Four Sundays before Christmas we start Advent in Germany.

I bought OH a calendar (and one for myself of course) for the first time since the the children were young (ones 53 and the other is 50 now).πŸ˜‚

We don't open the first box until 1st December though.

Needless to say they contain alcohol (little bottles of liqueurs) etc.

Hope life is treating you well (except for all the pain). Take care. πŸ’πŸΎπŸΈπŸ’₯

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS in reply to Constance13

Same for us Anglicans. But the Advent calendars are all designed with 25 days, ending on Christmas Day. My children always got the traditional calendars, you know, the ones with the biblical quotations or story of Christmas with a nice picture under each flap. My tea Advent Calendar and hubby's chocolate calendar are the first ones I've ever had with physical refreshment rather than spiritual! Just came in from my walk. I really thought the knee brace would help more than so far it has. Not sure what else I can do. Tomorrow I'll ask for referral to orthopod and then in a few years we'll see if I need one or two knee replacements.... :D

in reply to HeronNS

My granddaughter gave me an advent calendar with different flavors of caramel candies for each day. I cheated and have eaten almost half. 😏

Wow, jus t looked that up!.....well done.....It says for strength and mobility....I have neither....I feel very inadequate!....πŸ˜•

How strange just last week I bent down to see if I can still touch my toes, yes I can! Slipped over in the mud had a devil of a job getting up though.

Oh my goodness!! You're all so 'active'. My one walk a day seems completely inadequate. I'm really impressed and feel encouraged (if not a little shamed!) into sorting out some pilates, yoga or whatever for PMR (seen there's lots of stuff available on YouTube) I tried.....in a gentle fashion!.....to touch my toes, but hamstrings said a big fat "NO!!" πŸ˜„Thankyou for your 'conversations' that always give me food for thought, encourage me to think outside the box and frequently make me smile or laugh. I love all of you.
