Geez more antibiotics

So the surgeon said no colonoscopy for at least 2 months But I should have had 2 weeks antibiotics so he gave me 2 to take both 2 times a day for 2 weeks.

Here is the frightening interaction. Taking prednisone n 1 of the could cause tendon rupture. The way things keep happening to me I think I should start taking bets on it. Ok let's not n stay immobile I can do lazy....

It is a quinolone I take it? Medrol plus a quinolone gave me achilles tendonitis. Watch out and stop it if it is sore - OH took 2 doses of a quinolone with no pred and it happened!!!

in reply to PMRpro

Metronidazole 500 mgs n Ciprofloxacin 500 mgs will have to read insert to see which one.

Cipro is the one that eats tendons ...

If it is a quinolone I would want a very good explanation as to why it is the only option. I got severe tendon damage in 2005 long before Pred. I was not told of this risk and it was my dog’s vet who diagnosed it. It also happened to my sister after three doses and I’ve seen it in a handful of patients when I was a nurse since with no Pred in sight.

I currently have tendon problems which I think is due to my previous damage being exacerbated by Pred years down the line.

This is the second go around for my diverticulitis which is worse than before. So he has me taking the above for 2 weeks. I sure hope it goes easy on this round. I truly have had enough.

It isn't the only appropriate antibiotic and there are warnings worldwide about not using it unless it is absolutely unavoidable. He's happy to risk putting you on crutches at best, in a wheelchair at worst?

Tendon problems can occur at any point, even months after treatment finishes. Mine occurred after 6 ten day courses over 6 months and my sister was in crutches after 3 doses.

What a truly awful time you and your body are having. Please forgive me if what I suggest is something you've already tried.

You mention that you had an unhappy result when you tried some probiotics. Have you tried eating good, plain, live, yoghurt instead to see if it helps?

As you will know, people on here (I am one of them) take their pred with yoghurt and are happy that it helps protect their system against some of the side-effects of prednisolone - I, for one have read about the side-effects of the medication that may be prescribed to counter those side-effects and am far happier to eat yoghurt!

BUT as important, or even more important - in the light of your rocking from antibiotic to antibiotic.

In another part of my life I know that upping one's intake of 'real' yoghurt is hugely valuable when taking any kind of antibiotics - to replace the 'good' bacteria which are lost when the antibiotics are doing their job of killing off the 'bad' bacteria causing the illness.

I'm guessing that IV antibiotics may be different thing as they don't pass through the stomach: but there is no harm in adding to the good stock of bacteria in your stomach

I'm in the UK 18 months on Pred from 20 down to 6.5 at the moment. Always with yoghurt (in my case goat or sheep - my system doesn't like cow's milk) - no digestive problems so far. Final PS: I believe there are non animal yoghurts that contain probiotics but haven't completed my research on that yet.

Thanks I am on yogurt and back on probiotics. I don’t seem to have problems with dairy. 🐢

Interestingly enough I was also put on the same two drugs-cipro and flagyl at the emerg department for diverticulitis in May for one week. Flagyl 3x/day and cipro 2x/day. Nasty drugs and side effects. Was good for a bit until it wasn’t. It all came back. The surgeon who I now see said I wasn’t on it long enough due to the prednisone (7 mg) and put me on same meds for a second week. Fingers crossed but things are greatly improved but not a 100% yet. She said she’ll do a colonoscopy in about 3 months.

Hoping you get your gut settled with out any other complications.

in reply to karegodd

Yeah he said I would be getting colonoscopy down the road. Family history is mom n 2 sisters with colon cancer 2 of her brothers with different cancers and her oldest brother with heart attack all in their 60’s and all died within 10 months of each other. Worst year of my life.

Oh my goodness. I am so sorry to hear about your past year. That is so rough on you and your entire family and overwhelming. I hope your colonoscopy proves to be uneventful in that all things are good or at least manageable. You don’t need to be dealing with anything more - your plate is full and maxed out. Take care.

I’m going through diverticulitis, too, since the end of February. It’s also my second time, the first was last spring. I’ve been having trouble getting it under control and have been on antibiotics for many weeks straight. I had tendinitis with a fluoroquinolone antibiotic years ago (and other side effects). I told my doctor and she put my on Augmentin instead. There are several other non Cipro options. There is a Boxed warning for prescribing fluoroquinolones due to many dangerous side effects, some are more frequent in women over 60 and when taken with steroids. Here’s a list of problems associated with these antibiotics...tendinitis is not the only one by far.

If you’re uncomfortable with this you can ask to be switched to a different antibiotic.

Hope you get your diverticulitis under control soon. Mine makes me so sick in so many ways.

in reply to Ciar

Augmenten made me violently from 8pm to 5am I vomited liters of fliud. 2 days on n I feel pretty good so keeping fingers crossed. I will look at link in morning thank you

I always wonder why the first choice is so often Cipro.

Because the rep told them how wonderful it would be when it was launched in the mid-80s. I had started working in the field then, translating final reports for the marketing process. I look back on the fiction that was spouted then with a degree of horror now! And what doctors learn at a certain stage of their career sticks - better than most glue products ...

Ok so my new rheumatologist is calling for our phone appt tomorrow I am so freaked out by this I am afraid to move. So what do we do when doc orders a scary drug. I will say my diverticulitis has settled down in 3 days so don’t know what to think. The surgeon for my pre colonoscopy is the one who ordered it not the rheumatologist
