PMR vs Hyperparathyroidism

I have had PMR for over 2 years. After other issues came up I also got dx with HPT and the doc says it can mimic PMR and I need to have surgery. Although no one doing this with Covid 19

Has anyone experienced this.

Thanks in advance

Shannon

I was tested for HPT as I am in a young age bracket before diagnosis and have been tested since again but I am lucky to be negative.

Are they saying you can only have surgery to solve your problems based on your results but must wait ?

Or have they given you medication and advice to help at the moment?

HPT , like other health issues involving Pain , Fatigue and Neuro or Hormone symptoms, can trigger more PMR symptoms , and vice versa . Each condition pokes at the other and causes more Stress on the body.

Recommending surgery! But no surgery going on in USA or Canada. Husband just had a large cancerous tumour Behring his ear, and then ear reconstructed. So that and no doctors seeing patients I really have no recommendations.

I did read some articles that have suggested that it can mimic PMR. I do have elevated calcium, elevated pth, arrhythmia , bone and muscle pain, depression, and moderate kidney failure.

I get hopeful that Parathyroidectomy could help the pain of PMR as well as some other things.

It will have definitely been increasing your PMR symptoms because of the toll on your body.

It may be worth looking for a forum on HU that deals with Thyroid and Parathyroid questions and ask what treatment and suggestions they have that will help you.

They will know what treatment they got at the least while waiting for their operations and what advice there is for diet and behaviour / activity changes you need to do to stop it getting worse.

So sorry , it is unusual times but if your symptoms are bad or worsten they will still need to give you treatment and you will need to go for Medical help. Take care xx

If you join 'Thyroid UK' and 'Bone Health ' and write a post to each telling them you need a parathyroidectomy and including your age and other health issues ( PMR etc.) in the post and ask for advice on symptoms to look out for , how waiting for surgery affects it , any medications used to treat it and diet and activity changes you should do these groups can help you.

They have a lot of old posts under parathyroidectomy that you can read through too if you put this in the search at the top of the HU page . You can then ask for more help from those sufferers on their original posts too. Even if the posts are old I'm sure they will send you an answer with what they know.

Good luck xx

I hope as soon as things have settled down again, and they will, you can get the surgery promptly. The only problem I previously knew about hyperthyroidism was it leads to bone thinning. Treating the issue actually leads to reversal of that problem, so your bone density will improve after the procedure.

Is your blood calcium level very high? Does it need treating - in the absence of the only cure which is surgery, there is medical intervention for the short term.

I have had PMR for 5 yrs. Last year also diagnosed with HPT, no connection made between the 2. Was told I may need an op if my Blood calcium level gets too high, having blood test every 6 months.
