What kind of diet do you recommend as a PMR patient?

My husband and I are having the discussion on what kind of diet is best for me having PMR and now having an A1C of 6.5. Can you tell me what would be recommended for my daily diet now? Thanks

The single best thing is to limit carbs, especially white carbs, refined grains, added sugars, and increase your protein and vegetable sources of minerals, especially some leafy greens. Others will be along with more ideas too!

I'm not sure what A1C means, but if you have PMR and are on pred, it's good to reduce carbs and sugar. Even without PMR, it's best to cook from scratch and cut out processed foods. Make sure you get plenty of calcium (I don't eat dairy, so for me that's plenty of dark leafy greens).

It is the Hba1c blood test which is used as an indicator of pre-diabetes and diabetes. It reflects the blood sugar levels over the previous 3 months.

Hi, some follow anti inflammatory diets but as I have had diabetes since 2001, I started to go for a low carb, high fat diet. The high fat is good fat but includes cream and yogurts. I have some links to the carb content of common foots and a diet an you can learn from and apply without going into paying for it. It helps with some of the issues pred can cause..

The important thing is to choose a healthy diet that you can manage in the long term. Choosing a diet which is difficult to follow in my opinion is a waste of time as you will either be miserable on it or give it up and then feel guilty. I try and cook for myself and buy products in season. When I started pred I gave up gluten and simple carbs as I had heard they stop a moon face, in my case that worked. I do enjoy a glass of wine every so often though. I think I am 5.4.

I once read that red wine is good for keeping blood sugars down, that is my excuse anyway (not every day)

Nothing complex - just cut carbs a lot. No NO carb, LOW carb. But NO processed carbs ...

Number one tip: do not think of it as a 'diet' - immediately you'll concentrate on all the 'taboo' foods :( Make it a lifestyle choice, a way of taking control by eating healthily, nutritiously; the diet doctor site is especially good for low carb/high fat inspirations. I was diagnosed with steroid-induced Type 2 diabetes and by following this site have lowered my Hba1c level quite a bit and lost some weight as well... basically, eat for health but don't pass up celebratory cake, life's too short!

Thanks to all of you for your input. Need to get on top of it. I had lost 27 lbs before PMR hit. Prednisone has certainly changed my shape for sure.

I was on a low cab diet when I developed PMR/PR - where is the evidence????

Evidence for what? Low carb MAY help the PMR - I certainly know the next day if I eat more carbs than usual - but the primary aim is to reduce the risks of weight gain and steroid-induced diabetes as a result of the changes in how your body prices carbs when on pred.

I am doing low fat as I have gall stones - so surprising to see how much is in ordinary food - trying for 3 g in 100 g and still finding some nice treats - lots of fruit and veg and cooking from scratch ofcourse

Low carb, low histamine, moderate protein, plenty of good fats. I try and get close to keto limits. Also mix and match, sometimes alternate day fasting, sometimes 5:2, the odd day when I eat whatever I like. I rarely lose weight except the odd half pound here and there, but keep the weight from increasing. If you do nothing else and want a simple rule, cut out sugar including fruit and cut out bread.
