Arm pain?

Whitner profile image
26 Replies

I’m a 2 month PMR recipient (oh boy!) and over the weekend I lifted my 20 lb grandson out of his crib a few times and yesterday carried a box of tree lights up from the basement. I woke this morning with significant upper arm pain. Is this typical?

Yep!

You probably would have got away with one or the other- but not both!

Good job Christmas is only temporary 😳.

Lifting your grandson is probably worth it! But maybe not too many times in a day.

Thanks for the reply DorsetLady. So I guess this pain will eventually go away if I behave myself?

Afraid so! Even as well managed as my PMR is, if I carry a heavy shopping bag from the car to the house I will feel it in my biceps next day!

I had that happen too! And I was careful about it. Held the bag in both arms. This stuff is crazy!

The first time I picked the garden shears up to do some clipping I did 5 to 10 mins over a 30min period or something like that. My arms and hands shook for 90mins. I couldn't get a drink to my lips! Lots of crazy stuff to come 😉

Can’t wait!! So one more question... dark circles under eyes. Is that prednisone or PMR or neither?

in reply to Whitner

Bit of both for me, but had them pre pred so mine were mostly pmr. It's hard to decide as you feel so bad at the beginning it's like you haven't noticed these things creeping up on you!

My dark shadows have got worse over the year on pred mainly i suspect through pred induced insomnia!!

I'm spending a fortune on under-eye concealer to try and cover the shadows but it doesn't work, I always look knackered, probably because I am. I put it down to Pred and insomnia. Can anybody recommend something that works? Because I'm worth it. LOL

Plain ol’ erase and blush. I’ve started wearing my glasses more and that helps!

I am afraid in my case even with a brill gp we have found nothing to help my insomnia. A lot of people on the forum have a small dose of amitriptyline prescribed and take it before bed and it seems to help most of them. As i already took amitriptyline as an antidepressant it wasnt an option for me. Others have tried OTC sleeping tablets over a short period and this might be something you could give a try. Good luck.YBB

Yes it is. There just isn't the strength there to do these things without paying for it!! Unfortunately. Hope the pain goes soon.

Definitely. Our muscles a very intolerant of exertion and tells us about it for days after. Even if the burden is a bundle of love and a box of festive cheer.

Thanks for the reminder. After first dose of prednisone and all pain gone, I thought wow glad that's over and did more physical activity than I had done over years. Wrong. It all came back.

Although originally GCA my constant arm pain has made Rhuemy add PMR onset 3 years in, to my list. Carrying bags, gardening ect.gives me arm pain but for the last 6 months I have been doing weights. Twice a week at the gym shoulder press and high pull mostly, plus Pilates and I can now lift and carry much better.

I went to a concert on Monday night, a very rare treat. It was to see the Illegal Eagles a brilliant tribute band. They were filming for their DVD that night so were encouraging lots of audience participation. So I clapped along and joined in the choruses with gusto. By the end of the evening my voice was horse and my arms and shoulders felt like I had been doing press ups! The next day I still had upper arm and shoulder pain!

Its worn off now but off to another concert on Thursday. This time its the Australian Pink Floyd, another brilliant tribute band. I will be more careful with all the clapping this time but I know I will be singing along at the top of my voice.

Let's hope I will be Comfortably Numb after this concert :D

Glad to hear yours has worn off! I addressed 20 Christmas cards last night and you’d think I lifted weights or something. My arms are more sore today than yesterday and I just feel tired. Maybe a little cold coming on? I feel like such a wimp!!!

Sometimes we have to remind ourselves that it is just overdoing things as an older person. Often when me and my OH have had a busy day out or been to a gig, he aches in the same places as me and he doesn't have any PMR or arthritis. he is just getting on in years. In fact these days he seems to have much less energy than I have, he is 70 and no illness I am 67 with GCA/PMR

I'm only 57!

Me too S4ndy! My PMR just hit at 66 and prior I was always ready to go. I guess that’s what makes this so difficult 🥴
