Type 2 blood glucose kit

Hi again. Thanks for the laughs about my stay in hospital. I had my blood sugar tested a couple of times and would love to get to grips with this by myself. So would happily buy a testing kit. Any recommendations? Amazon is my preferred source for buying stuff. Ta. David

Discuss it with your doctors first because it isn't the meter that costs - it is the disposables, the stix and lancets. And that does mount up if they aren't on prescription. If you need it - you could have it without shelling out yourself I think.

If you type free blood sugar monitors in Goggle search bar thier are a few but as PMRpro says its the testing sticks that are expensive about £20 for 50 on Amazon.Not sure about lancets as never had to purchase

Only have mine as nearly all family are Diabetic so really need to be careful

There are lots and lots on the market. I am on my 10th pair of machines. If you have problems with fiddly things then ask your Dr if they will prescribe cartridges which automatically rotate to present integral test strip rather than those fiddly little strips in a pot the size of an old film case. I used to drop more than I used. If you can't, then go for cheap and cheerful. I think 50 loose test strips are 20quid in my chemist, the machines 20 to 30. I have had accu-chek machines for 20years and this last lot are several years old.

They are weird in England re type2 these days, aren't you in Scotland? They are trying not to prescribe test strips and lancets to type 2 saying they don't need then but if someone takes metformin or glicglazide a meter should be used in my view. So see what you can get from doctor.

On topic. I've come across about 20 people of varying ages and sizes in the hospital that are type 2. This is in 24 hours. Heck of a lot!

Has the Doctor suggested you need one?

If so , it's actually worth going to the GP explaining what is happening , and , if you are at a more sensitive level as a type 2 Diabetic or prediabetic you can request and may be able to apply to get the recommended Diabetic kit free via your surgery in the UK. That also gets replaced when required free of charge and you get test strips on prescription.

Otherwise I will check with my husband tomorrow for his make and model number as it's best to buy one that they recommend for test sensitivity ( he's on his sick bed tonight so I don't want to wake him up!)

No he hasn't recommended one. I have been pre diabetes the a result of 54 came through. Then! 48. I'm up again now maybe being in hospital isn't helping. I'm all for self help and would happily monitor myself daily. I would take any recommendations and advice from this great group of people. D

It may even be worth asking if you can speak to the Diabetic Unit , or just speak about it getting one via your Doctor in charge when they come to your bed , if you say you really feel it will help you in future and maybe prevent some future hospital visits I bet they will jump on it. You could fill out the forms there while you are stuck in bed , or might even organise one with strips for you to take home with you .

The GP , if you are prescribed Diabetic medication and the hospital agree to the need has no excuse not to give youngest strips on prescription for free too.

Just remember , don't always use the same finger to prick or it can cause sores.

I use Agamatrix jazz which I was given by my doctor and find it works well for me
