I'm 48 today! Why this is a sign of Birthday ' Brain Fog' and is this just another unwelcome gift of GCA/PMR?

I know we don't usually discuss our birthdays on the Forum but I thought this milestone in my Life might be worth mentioning to All you understanding folks because you may be victims of Birthday " Brain Fog" too.

So , I'm 48 , why is this significant?

Well , if any of you have read my posts or replies over the last year you might have noticed that I have been saying that I am 48 for the last year!

Only , this morning , a day when your Family vengefully recognises your age in ever increasing numbers , did my daughter's remind me that I had completely ignored being 47.

I'm sitting having breakfast in bed , a bowl of yoghurt , a mountain of pills ( large enough that Skinny Johnny may choose to scale them for his next PMR/ GCA charity Hike!) and a morning brew, when I say casually to my girls , " Well only one more year to the big 50!"

Eric and Grandma looked at me with the usual smirk of confused amusement , "Mother you are only 48!!!"

I looked aghast , " I've been telling everyone I'm 48 all year ! What the heck! Flipping GCA !"

And then came another birthday revelation , Grandma ( as you know , my youngest girl is called) reminded me ,with a little too much relish , " It's not the GCA , you've always had Birthday " brain fog " you can't blame the drugs for that , that's all You!"

( You can go off people you know , if she wasn't in charge of making my Birthday Cake I would be tempted to send her into the garden and lock the door ...again!)

Eric ( the eldest) is now making the bed wiggle painfully as she rolls about it in hysterics , giggling,

" Happy Birthday You Woolly Headed Ninnymuggins!!"

I decided to use a "spoon" kicking through the duvet and throwing a pillow at them both as they tried to escape out of the bedroom door.

A big sip of coffee , and a little thought has made me come to write to You, the only folks whom truly understand the blight of the ' Brain Fog ' and ponder , is it just Me or have we all just blamed our fuzzy noggins on PMR and Pred when actually it's not their fault at all ? ( or at least not entirely!)

It's true , I have been useless at remembering my age since I was at least 23 ( or maybe 22!). Unless my birthday had an 0 , 1 or a 5 at the end it was always a Game if Chance if I got it right . And , since having the wonders that are Children , I have always had a gaggle of giggling offspring to gleefully remind me of my foggy memory on the matter of my age . I am that stupid too. I don't even manage to shave a year off my age , I usually add one or two on. Like the years aren't racing by fast enough!!

And how about all those other lapses in memory that plague us all. Is it just the PMR ? No , that has just added another ever growing cause for the Mind Malaise , it's made it more noticeable , because our Medical woes make us look out for signs of this Memory Mould , but in reality , bit by bit , Brain Fog has taken a bite out of us All for years.

Lost items , like spectacles , that end up being on your head. Keys , searched for in every bag or drawer only to turn up in your pocket.

Shop trips for milk , when you come home with everything but.

Walking through a doorway that seems to have the mind altering power of the River of Forgetfulness on the trip to Hades , and arriving in another room without the foggiest idea of why you went there, and then, only remembering why you took the trip when you sit back down again .

Forgotten appointments , wrong dates for days out , birthdays and anniversaries , or the worst form of memory loss of all , forgotten invitations to guests to call at your own house which are quickly covered up , after a concealed look of shock, as your friends pass through the door and you rush to the freezer to find an emergency entertaining meal.

Now , there was a clue years ago , and another one of my eccentricities. I have always had a freezer of emergency entertainment meals , and an emergency box of gifts and cards because like the Girl Guides I was always prepared , and unlike Elephants , I have always forgot.

It's one of those "Mummyisms" , along with "Birthday Brain Fog" that my Daughter's always spout affectionately that they love about Mummy.

And this is the answer to my question , is my ' Brain Fog ' just caused by PMR/ GCA and the much misaligned Pred? The answer is No!

I suspect the same can be said of all of us here too.

Over the years our forgetfulness was put down to many things . When it comes to the ladies , we may have blamed Pregnancy , Periods , PMT and the Menopause .

There's not a gent , who hasn't spent many hours circling the house looking for a variety of things , before finally giving in and asking their wives for assistance only to hear the well used phrase embarrassingly announced to One and All , " Oh, he'd forget his head if it wasn't screwed on!"

Busy lives were often blamed for acute bouts of "Mind Melt " and " Boggy Brain" , especially if we forgot to get something from the shop or that winning answer we always knew became a " Lost Dog" at a Pub Quiz or playing Trivial Pursuits.

And then there are the folks on here , like Me , who didn't begin the journey down the road of Chronic Conditions with PMR / GCA , but years earlier , with a building catalogue of Autoimmune , Autoinflammatory or Neurological Conditions that could put a Medical Thesaurus to shame. For us , the ever expanding Foam of Fog , has been taking over more and more of our Mental Acuity for decades with every new ailment and drug .

Even the Exercise and Health Junkies will admit they were sometimes beaten in Mind as well as Body over the years by getting Dehydrated , losing Sodium or not getting their Nutrition right. Well before PMR/ GCA had a bite!

Yes, in reality , every little chemical change in our bodies has been a distraction to our minds for years , at first an occasional blip , but even without GCA /PMR if we really look back on things Brain Fog was becoming an ever growing Blot on the Landscape.

So , today , now that I'm ......ERM...... 48!!!!

I am happy to admit , it's not just the GCA , the PMR , the Pred or any of the other things that afflict me . It's all of them and none !

It's Life , It's Biology , It's Me !!!

And it may make me want to drag my brain out of my skull with a knitting needle , throw it down the street and beat it with a stick ( not that my neighbours need any more reason to think I'm two fries short of a Happy Meal than me doing a Basil Fawlty on my Cerebellum !) but it makes my Family and Friends love me all the more.

So , today , I'm not going to celebrate my age , but my Brain Fog and all the happy times I have had , not just despite it , but because if it. Because being positive is the only way I know of surviving all the slings and arrows of this sickly life of ours.

Now , where did I put that remote control!!

Hugs and cupcakes to all you Woolly Headed Ninnymuggins , and may PMR/ GCA and all the rest be a distant memory for us all sometime in the years to come .

Happy birthday from me as well - were the real 48 pressies better/bigger than the practice 48 birthday ones?

It's their fault really - they should put the right number of candles on top ...

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyed in reply to PMRpro

That's true , I can blame them for not being willing to dice with death and cause panic in our smoke alarm by not putting the right number of candles on last year's cake.

If I had gone by that I would only be 13 today!!

You are , as ever , full of wisdom and handy tips.

Perhaps I should make myself a badge this year as well and wear it every day just so I can be sure of what age I am , even if I might forget what year it is ! πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜˜

Stop complaining, you’re still a kid. It’s when you get to my age you start thinking about the future...and definitely sometimes ( well most time )tell porkies about ones age.

In the meanwhile β€œB” ( may I be so familiar) 🌹🌹🌹I wish you the joyous of celebrations with your kin...and will look forward to your 50th.

Have fun whilst you are still young. To hell with PMR/ GCA for a day.

Thanks so much , knowing my Brain I will still think it's my 50 the next year and have to celebrate that twice too!

I'm hoping I will have improved enough soon to enjoy my Youth with gusto , instead of a box of paracetamol and an early night with my heat pad !πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

In our hearts we are all still 22 , and none of us forum friends will go down without a fight!!

My " real " and " pretend" 48th birthday presents have probably been affected more by my health than my Brain has , and the " pretend" pressies were better.

Last year , I got a Festival ticket ( that I had to give away!) , a new wetsuit , a jigsaw ( the electric variety not one with a picture of cats) and a pair of soft climbing shoes and a Lush bath gift box.

This year , I got two pairs of compression leggings and sleeves , a padded mat to make it easier to exercise on the floor , some covers for my wrist supports , extra thick bed socks , a new pillow and a large tub of antiinflammatory moisturizer .

So , the joys of the Body Achy have finally taken their toll on my gift list .

Yeah, Goodness knows what I'll get next year.

Although those flyers have started to pop through the door for Stannah stair lifts , Saga holidays and pre paid funerals so I could end up with a bucket of prunes , a hoist and a coffin.

It must be the company I'm keeping !πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜˜πŸ˜˜πŸ˜˜πŸ˜

Games for the Aged?

Is this just a Community activity in your building or a board game we could all buy and have a laugh trying to play at home?

I have an up date on my gifts , they have definitely improved since the earlier ones today.

Eric has given me a Chinese Lucky Cat and a pack of Fortune telling fish ( like the ones you get in a Christmas cracker) and she made me a badge this afternoon that says ," 48 , and still sitting!" So I can't forget now!

A selection of handmade crochet slipper socks ( so comfy!!) made by Grandma and a pop art style painting of Alfred Hitchcock.

They have also made me a gluten free cake with custard flavour sponge and rhubarb and raspberry buttercream , topped with raspberry macarons , so it is definitely party time tonight.

The OH is just working on making me a balloon animal , I asked for a skunk this year.

I wont tell you what I will wish for later but I hope that it comes true for us All!😘

I have been friends with you for what aeems like years but in reality is only a year. Or have i known you for years and it feels like a few months? Who knows!! There have been moments when i seriously doubted you had a sensible bone i ln you. I have had pm"s at silly oclock in the morning where it needs a dictionary and a translator to decipher and other moments when you have made me doubt my own sanity!! (This is under review)

I seeiously doubt pmr or any of the other multitude of illnesses you seem determined to collect are to blame for your brain fog. Its simply you being you.

Happy birthday my friendly muppetxx

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyed in reply to Yellowbluebell

Thank you YB !

I can always count on you to give me the friendly mocking I enjoy and deserve.

After your many tales of entertaining your own neighbours with your japes over the last year I'm pretty sure you can't blame PMR , Pred , or just knowing wacky old Me, for being the cause of your Precarious Sanity either.

But we love you for it all the more , and , at least we can enjoy the " Brain Fog " years together .

My neighbours just love my entertaining exploits and i think it has long since been decided by them that i am a fruit and nut loop!! I cant help it that even the easiest of tasks result in the same type of chaos yours do!!

Yes , but you started to get such a notorious reputation in your area that you had to move house !!!

Even I've not had to sell up ...... Yet!!

Yellowbluebell profile image
Yellowbluebell in reply to Blearyeyed

I didnt actually sell i just let it out!! These neighbours have been very lucky as the garden is too small for the pool.which did cause a lot of problems at my old house and i havnt attempted the fairy lights yet!! I have even avoided being seen in some weird sort of fancy dress as well!! Oh no does this mean i am finally growing up?!!

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyed in reply to Yellowbluebell

No, it just means that you are pulling the new neighbours into a false sense of security before you finally let the insanity strike , probably some time close to Xmas when you try to wrestle those fairy lights again!!πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜˜

There is no chance of you becoming a grown up any more than there is me. Brighton crown court has been waiting for that to happen to me for 2 decades and look where that got them!! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Yes , I do that too!!

Did I really write 8 loaves of bread on my list??! Nope !

That's a combo of Brain Fog and indecisiveness for me . I might choose things from around the shop that are on my list of different types or flavours that I thoroughly intend to make a selection from , discarding most at the end .

By the time I get two thirds round the Fatigue takes over and I completely forget my Grand Plan , I shove the trolley at my OH at the checkout and the next thing you know you have three different types of toothpaste and a weird vegetable you have no idea what to do with!

Ah, Happy Days , if it wasn't for the Brain Fog we would have far less to laugh about so there's always a silver lining .... And an endless supply of toast!!

I have to ask my Son how old I am

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyed in reply to Rose54

You could just do what my Nana did , by 65 she decided that she was going to count back down again instead.

I found it more and more confusing as a child trying to work it out so by my teens I just decided that I was going to pretend she would forever be 36!

She was more than happy with that , even when she reached 92!!

What is wrong with baggy clothes (although nothing much in my wardrobe classes as loose anymore). I now have fat and thin clothes but baggy rules

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyed in reply to Yellowbluebell

Now I have to wear the compression clothing and a number of braces so unless I want to look like my superhero alter ego , Doc Venom , in ninja black , I then need to put a loose jacket or long cardigan over the top .

At the moment I am sporting my kimono over my tight black clothing , plus a pair of the new crochet slipper socks that Grandma makes. They are great in bed and out.

Now , if I could only remember where I put my slippers!! Hugs xx

Your family sound lovely. My mother always added a year to our lives. Although I was 6 was in my 7th year so you were right all along. Have a lovely birthday, you are so young to have PMR but when it fizzles out hopefully you'll still be young enough to runs rings round the rest of us!

I've never heard of anyone saying they were older than they are, except when we wanted to get into the pub and weren't 18!

Some I know have been known to knock a few years off!

Hope you enjoyed your birthday, the cake I've read you had sounded delicious! x

Sounds really good. It’s the quality of the company not the number as we know. Your family sound lovely. We are very blessed if we have caring family. If you have time sometime PM me the recipe- sounds delicious! Xx
