Can anyone advise on having a tooth implant whilst having GCA (12 months in and down to 12 mg of Pred). I have had one other implant so know the pain but I have to have a tooth out and dont want to have an ugly gap for too long.

thank you all.

Hi there,

I have GCA and the only thing I can tell you is anything that stresses my body affects my GCA inflammation. What does the oral surgeon say, does he/she know your condition and how much pred you are on? Are you on any bone drugs?

Hi Forwardmotion, thank you so much for your kind reply. The dental surgeon knows I am on pred and the dosage e and i am not on any other bone drugs except taking calcium supplements. You are right about stress, any time I am stressed it affects my temporal pain. I have had a tough year with also bilateral tendinopithy which i am still struggling with so making my smile look nice again would be a boost.

I had an implant while on about 8 mg Pred but for PMR not GCA. There were no problems though as I was sedated, apparently my blood pressure went quite low during the procedure. I assume this was due to the Pred. I’m not on any bone drugs otherwise that may have been an issue.

thank you so much Casia. You reminded me that I had sedation when I had one done a few years ago and it helped, esp when they get the black and decker drill out! All best wishes

Hi there I had one when I was below 5 but had PMR. The drug they were most concerned about was alendronic acid. I had mine under local and it wasn’t any worse than some other procedures I have had. Good luck

I had a dental implant at 17.5 pred. No problem. The dental surgeon had an artificial tooth made which was glued on between appointments. I never had a gap. If you don’t have this you will have a gap for quite lengthy periods.

Typically after an implant and/or bone graft is placed you have to wait 4-6 months for the bone to osseointegrate and make the implant solid. Once it is determined the implant "has taken" the oral surgeon places a healing collar after which your regular dentist will place a post and core and then proceed with impressions and the construction of a crown.

All this takes time, so in the interim your general dentist can make you a "flipper" to wear in the edentulous space to satisfy any esthetic concerns. Just make sure the flipper rests passively and is not placing any undue pressure on the implant site.

Good luck !

Hope you will do some research on this implant decision ...My PMR started shortly after my implant was done and I am currently doing research with my Docs and dentist to see possible removal to see if this has an end result of improvement in my PMR...inflammation

comes from something somewhere...Georgedog.

Hi Georgedog. You posted nine months ago about removal of implant to see if this reduces inflammation. Have you any further news on this?
