Humming noise in my left ear

This humming noise ( like tv when the channel has finished broadcasting) started a few days ago. It’s only in one ear..

I am now on 5mg of Prednisone after 18months of my diagnosis of PMR.

I understand this can be a side effect of the prednisone...has anyone else suffered this problem due to medications?

Will it eventually clear up as I reduce Prednisone ? 🙏

Humming can be a form of tinnitus. Have you done anything differently lately? Any added stress...? Or exposure to a viral cold? It could also, in some cases; be impacted ear wax or an inner ear infection.

In any case, I would mention it to the doctor. Especially if it does not resolve. Just to be on the safe side....and to rule out any underlying cause connected to PMR or GCA.

Hope you get better soon yulik. I'm sure you will keep us informed or your progress!

It could be a number of reasons, the simplest of which is ear wax or a bit of fluid behind the ear drum. I’d get someone to have a quick look down there before worrying or blaming Pred.

Thank you Snazzy and Stiffjoints

I shall try and get an appointment ASAP with my GP. 👍

Hi,

This sounds crazy, but sometimes my whole body feels like it’s humming on the inside, I know it’s the pred but so strange anyway!

After GCA I have a mildly muffled ear and a bit of tinnitus on the GCA side. I haven't done anything about it because it was the least of my problems. I think I have adjusted to it and just have to make sure I put the phone to the other side.

Thanks Jinasc, very much for the link. Truth be known I am very worried that I may be starting with GCA. I have had an occasional headache on both sides of my head, but it comes and goes.

Last week I was at my rheumatologist ( before I had humming in my ear). She was very pleased with my progress and wants me to do the test for my adrenal glands...I’m now on 5mg. 👏

Did others start with their GCA having these symptoms?

On Monday next I’m going to see ent doctor...🙏

Download and print the research stuff. The take it with you when you see the ent person.

A copy for your Rheumy and GP would be a good idea..............they do not always get the time to see new stuff.

My fingers crossed it is not GCA.

YuliK - I've corrected the link, it now links to the research results from the ears study.

My humming ended up being impacted ear wax. Only the second time I ever had it in my life so it hadn’t even occurred to me as a possibility.
