Dental work

Hi - I’m new here - have been putting off dental work for ages but my nieces wedding is coming up and I want my teeth to look good! I was diagnosed with GCA last November and have been tapering my steroids down and now on 10mg but started methotrexate recently. Can anyone advise about whether it is okay to have simple dental work. My rheumy said It would be advisable not do implants right now. I would be nice to have white teeth at the very least! Any advice gratefully sought....

I haven't had implants yet but have had my teeth scraped and cleaned 6monthly from 13mg down. Methotrexate can effect teeth apparently, well gums so actually probably a good idea to see dentists and hygenist. If the wedding is weeks away I am not sure I would risk implants but others have and will no doubt enlighten you.

I have attached this link regarding methotrexate and dental stuff. It relates to people with rheumatoid arthritis but it's the mxt bits that might be useful.

Thanks so much! That is really helpful.

Oh ...and welcome!!

Hi Digby

Welcome 🌷🌷🌷

Did you have a dental check up before you started your Methotrexate? Are you on Alendronic Acid or any other bisphosphonate as that is what needs to be considered before undertaking any dental work & always tell your Dentist what Medication you are taking.

Kind Regards

MrsN

Hi Digby,

I have had GCA for 3.5 years. I went in the first 6 month because we had just moved to a new town. I am actually going today for the first time since then. I just didn’t want someone poking around in my head with all the problems I already had. I think there is a problem with a back molar so I’ll go in and get the full service. I decided it was best not to wait and have an infection to deal with. So, if you have major problems keep up on them so they don’t get worse but don’t do anything that might add to the inflammation bucket.

Hi there I go to the dentist every three months for a clean. I had awful problems and had 5 root canals and an implant in a year. My dentist has been very mindful of my PMR

That’s really good to hear! I must be more diligent!

It is only invasive dental work that is a problem and it is more likely a problem with alendronic acid.

Ummm ultimately it will be more involved with sinus lift and implant but will discuss with them. Thanks!
