Easy way to garden permanently while ill

I have just started my patio garden. The picture shows the brick blocks.

If you have a garden area using these instead of wood works great n you can stack them 2 .3..or 4 tall. When I had then in a regular garden I grew strawberries all in holes around the top and they grew great.

I am planting herbs and plants the deer don't like as I won't be able to afford money or energy wise to keep redoing.. In the walkway I put Rosemary n will trim it like a little hedge otherwise it will really take off.

If you want to do this you will find it is so much easier to garden then just a tilled up section.

Once I am done which is almost then I can sit in my chair water my plants n drink my beer. What could be better.?

I have to have my hands in dirt it is a necessity for my happiness and chill factor.

So my little Rosemary hedge will smell nice n reach up to the ugly rail which. Is useful for pulling myself up. Oh to be getting old n ill...

Oh find some young teenager n get them to haul the bricks n soil. Then pull up a chair n start planting...

What a lovely idea that would make life easier. If you are up to long distance travel I have some rooted cuttings you could have!

in reply to scats

I live in Oregon USA.. It might be a longer trip than I can do. But I would have loved the cuttings.

I wish I had a flatter garden surface cos growing in the holes great. My garden has a 3 foot slope to the right and 20ft slope down. If I get to the bottom I will need a strapping teenager to drag me back up!?

in reply to

I had a large slope at one of my homes. I used the bricks like mini retaining walls and planted in them. Just dug out a flat spot not too big but enough to put some plantings. I was a lot younger and still had a rope tied off to help get me back up the slope.

I have been in the house for 22yrs. The first 2yrs involved clearing 60ft x15ft of wild blackberry and brambles, tree roots and bindweed, . 4th year I planted a similar range of veg to now, but had sweetcorn patch, onions, garlics as well. It is quite a drop...almost 15ft over 60ft length. Years ago I built a wooden walkway down one side and did a 15ft by 12fts raised decking. This had to be ripped out but no idea why....oh yes had to get fenced in for the dog. I need to put steps down to the bottom.that be the labour I need.

I am impressed most people would plant Ivy and be done with it. I am glad I don't have too much land to plant. We are allowed the plot out front but not all apartments get it so again I feel blessed.

Hey Jerri how about Thursday we could get in our Jetson cars and go anywhere we want. Oh right they haven't build them yet. It would be fun tho to Jetson around. Here we are making wonderful friends and we are all spread out.

It has made this journey so much nicer with support from each other.

Hi Lin-calif, haven't heard from you for a while!

Great garden idea! Love fresh herbs, i tuck a few wave petunias in among the greens! Makes me smile!

in reply to Purplecrow

I have never heard of wave petunias. I know petunias. I will be growing some flowers from seed cost effective but I hate the wait for them to grow.

Wave petunias came out a few years ago, I remember they were a big item in the local garden centres. I think they flower even more profusely than the other varieties. They don't even need to be deadheaded to keep them flowering.

I found a real nursery about 7 miles out of town. I will have to ask her about them. Not for a bit as I have overspent so far... What is nice is that once I get the plot n blocks planted then it is just weeding which shouldn't be much. The simple life is fine with me..

Was so intrigued, that I had to check it out. Fascinated, what a generous plant, a bit of tender care, good feed and water, then, bingo. A win-win situation. Here's a useful link I found :-

wave-rave.com/Howto/Plantin...

Then sit in your garden, relax, and feel good - take care.

Wow! Very nice... Thanks for link...

Hi Lin,

Nice to hear you are doing well! Love the garden idea. I’ve got pots of herbs and kale all around my deck, love this time of year😎. When I eat fresh food I feel so much better with this illness.

I saw a sign for cherries at a roadside stand and bought 3 lbs. He wouldn't sell for less. So now I have to look up freezing cherries.

Great idea! Thanks Lin

Do you use any particular type of soil? I want to try this!

in reply to Mstiles

I use the least expensive potting soil. I have bought the more expensive but saw no real difference. Our bags come 1 cubit or 1.5 cubic. If you are putting the blocks down on dirt you will only need to start with a single row. If no dirt under you will need at least 2 high for planting to give roots room. I tell you it was so easy when I made these plots then I just had to deal with a few weeds and nice soil. It takes about 10 bags or so to fill up a 4x8 plot.

This is a great idea,it is so relaxing to sit outside on a lovely day surrounded by plants you have been planting and nurturing ,and of course the beer makes it even more enjoyable.

in reply to Grants148

Yes I am hoping it will be private and won't draw too much attention.. The older I get the more peaceful I feel by myself. And I don't want to share my beer.

What lovely plans Lin. Hope you manage to get a nice young teenager for the heavy work. It will be a lovely space.

in reply to SheffieldJane

Yes I found a hard worker and feel blessed. I won't need him too often as most of the heavy stuff is done. I feel pretty good with allergies work. It feels nice to sit in a flower patio w dinner or lunch or beer n pretzels hehehe

Hi lin-calif

What a lovely idea, thanks for sharing. Maybe while you are waiting for the rosemary to grow up you could paint the rail a lovely bright colour (grab one of those young teenagers to do it). Where are you in Oregon? I was on the phone last night to my friend in Klamath Falls. Spent three months with her there many years ago. All the best cc 🤗

in reply to Carrollee

Sorry I missed your post or maybe I read it and then forgot I read it or maybe I answered and forgot to hit post or I know I know I read it as I remember Klamath falls. Oh well....memory. ... so yes l live about 4 hrs north of Klamath Falls. Right at the intersection of where 395 hwy and 26 hwy meet. I have to remember how close I live to these two hwys...if I go out at 4 ish I hit lots of traffic which in our town is about 4 cars. I love living in Mayberry... hehehe. It is really John Day......
