Wrists and other pain

I have discovered I have wrists and fingers, never before have these hurt so much, this is a whole new level! Not sure how I’m going to hold tools today, more codeine☹️

Just had my Preds for breakfast, nothing else as advised, let’s see how the day works out.

Hi

Have you done a lot of work this week using hand tools this may account for the extra pain in your hands .

I realize how difficult it may be being a self employed carpenter but try to avoid jobs that cause pain .

I get pains in hands and fingers sometimes when I'm reducing this may be another reason.

Others will be along with advice

Hope the pain subsides now you have taken Preds

Hi, have you discussed it with your GP as he may suggest different Meds to help with your hands or even anti inflammatory gel to rub in but needs discussion with GP - do you take paracetamol along with your Codeine as they work best together.

I gather you’re a Carpenter, so that’s not easy, can you change tasks more frequently say having two projects on so you’re not doing the same movement repetitively.

Kind Regards

MrsN

morning thanks for the input, I will try adding paracetamol to the Codein, I do have a gell but to be honest this makes little difference, I also have Naproxen but have not used this since taking the Preds as I believe they don't mix?

You have to be careful about anti inflammatory’s with Pred so that’s worth having a chat with the doctor about, l had to have an anti inflammatory added to the mix for my knees.

You may find the paracetamol with Codeine helps too, l hope so.

Good Luck 🍀 & let us know how you get on.

I think half my problem is I'm 61 going on 35 :) still trying to do all the things I have always done, and the thought that I cant, Shoot, ride the motorcycle, work, etc is scary

I had a good solution from the Occupational Therapy dept. Namely thumb supports which I wear when my wrist/thumb play up!

You might find that finger and hand exercises first thing help. There are lots to chose from. I find touching fingertips one helps. I have linked this set but loads online. I love just slightly above body temp water in a bowl and plunge hands in for a few mins. When it's really bad nighttime thumb braces have helped.

My suggestion would be to take them earlier to zap the 4am cytokines. IME I have much better mornings and I can get away with less pred when I take my dose before bed (coated pred). My recent attempt at morning dosing led to rubbish mornings, and I felt I would have to increase the dose had I stayed there, but I moved back to bedtime and settled.

Hi I thought you should do the mornings as the Pred stops me sleeping,? I could give it a go now, 13.37 and I feel much better but I am in the office today

I have started splitting my 6mg with 5mg (coated) at 10pm and 1mg (uncoated) at 7amish. Usually people take a third of the dose at night and 2/3 in the morning. I have noticed I am better on a morning since doing that but run out of steam in the evening.

I take coated pred, takes at least 4 hours to get into my system. I take it between 10pm and midnight, so it won’t be in my system til 2am-4am by which time I’m away with the fairies 😴

If you’re on plain pred you could try at 2am (nuisance I know) but if it works you could maybe persuade doc to prescribe coated to aid sleep, as sleep is really important for health, blood sugars, all sorts of things.

Have you tried splitting the dose to improve mornings? And have you recently reduced the dose?

I've had some problems with my hands, wrists, and fingers similar to you. Part of my problems may have been overdoing it. However, I started wearing some light compression gloves at night and it really helps. I use Mueller. It leaves the fingers open. It doesn't restrict the blood flow but seems to increase the blood flow. Don't get them too tight or you will restrict the blood flow and make it much much worse.

Thanks everyone

It’s only 5 months in now and I need to get regulated with what I take and when. It’s all a pain in the ass (literally) 😂

Have a good weekend

I noticed if i eat abunch of garbage like pizza or icecream, my hands, wrists, and fingers will be swollen and painful. Diet, for me, has something to do with it. Not only over doing it, but also eating garbage.

Simple carbs (basically white, highly processed ones) and sugars of all sorts are pro-inflammatory - make the PMR inflammation and therefore the symptoms worse.

in reply to PMRpro

This is so weird. But exactly right. I’ve noticed every time I eat many carbs and processed food, I go downhill a few days

We don't think it is weird - and part of why we push low carb!!
