Idiotic observations of others to my affliction

Following on from how people feel the need to comment on “my PMR”. Ive just remembered a classic. I am a Christian and when I broke my neck in a horse riding accident I was left in a brace from neck to lower back for 6 months. I could walk, but as i was trampled on by the horses behind me , I was very bAttered and bruised. Anyway at church one day a women bounced up to me and in front of my very traumatised 8 yr old said:- “ I broke my neck once and following prayer, i didn’t need any brace or help!” I can still recreate the subsequent bubbling rage if I let myself!! If I could have head butted, kicked or hit her I would have done. (Then prayed for forgiveness of course!) this was 22 yrs ago! Sufficient to say some people will make a comment, this just falls out of their stupid mouths, their brains and hearts (if they have these) are not involved in the process!

Very old wise saying - “ engage brain before opening mouth” - if only it was that easy for some people!

So funny... I was JUST watching this video.....

It’s so very annoying when people tell you about their illnesses and how they cured them without doctors, medicines, hospital etc etc. Clever s-ds all!!

It’s appalling the things people say, even when you don’t invite comment or even complain!

My ‘favourite’ of all time insensitive comments was “l think you are so Brave going out, looking like you do!” I was rendered speechless & hurt beyond words!........

Well, yes! She’s an Air Head! She’s 👩🏻‍🦰 but should be 👩🏼

She’s just kind of oblivious really!.......

There are some people you can forgive & she’s one of them! 💕

I have to ask - what were the squares meant to be? Or is it censored ;)

At least if it is a permanent state of brain it wasn't aimed at you specifically :)

She’s a Red Head but should be Blond ~ no offence to Blonds intended 😉

When OH had cancer first time round he was on chemotherapy which left him as bald as a coot all over. Once it started to grow back as bumfluff, one of the priests at the Cathedral asked "Does that mean the treatment isn't working any more?" Didn't even flinch as he realised what he'd said. For someone who visited the sick and dying ...

Wait what???!! Where did he learn pastoral care?

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to PMRCanada

I have no idea! He was a "late entrant". But to be honest - I have only experienced good pastoral care in one church I have been attached to and that was the Bishop who was also a late entrant after a lifetime of army service (Burma) and being an accountant - although I have seen priests in other local churches who "got" it

The other (with the side-kick) was later convicted of fraud but not kicked out of the church. Had the story of that Cathedral Church been a novel you wouldn't have believed it ...

PMRCanada profile image
PMRCanada in reply to PMRpro

I worked with a minister who was also a “late entrant” as you say. He sold life insurance for the first 20 years of his career. He managed to transition well though, in part taking cues and advice from others at times.

In my experience working for the church I’ve learned clergy are “just” people like us, and can make mistakes. I also noted that not all of the congregation acted “Christian-like” if that makes sense. Our congregation had a reputation of “eating their minister”, making it very difficult to fit in and do the work.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to PMRCanada

Oh yes - makes perfect sense, we saw a lot of that in the Church of England, it had been less so in the Scottish Episcopal church which does have a different structure. But the behaviour we saw by some congregations and priests with respect to their musicians and other volunteers really did finish us. I miss the music, I don't miss the people.

PMRCanada profile image
PMRCanada in reply to PMRpro

Ah yes, the music....might I say my favourite part (except of course the sermons and eulogies delivered by an outstanding indigenous female minister who was very creative and gifted).

I sang in the choir all 10 years and the experience was “divine”.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to PMRCanada

I left the church after singing in one or other place for 50+ years. OH hadn't been in church music quite as long but had sung and conducted for years. It was a wrench at the time.

Wraysbury profile image
Wraysbury in reply to PMRpro

Wow that was a huge step

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Wraysbury

That first step was the hardest. When not one single person from the place came to ask us where we were and if everything was OK - the rest of the road was easier. I continued to go to MU meetings at a sister church but because I worked my attendance was erratic, it always had been. And when I was on the receiving end of some very snide comments about that from the woman who ran it, I knew it was time to leave altogether. No regrets now.

Having no regrets is always good! Regrets use up too much of our limited energy!!

I’ve experienced a couple of comments that have upset me in the last year.

First was a difficulty I had with my closest friend. When I was losing weight (to avoid pred side effects, diabetes, and to help with my pending knee surgery), I noted her making more and more comments about my weight loss. These comments turned to jealous sarcasm to the point I finally confronted her and asked if she had a problem with my weight loss. Relieved she said “yes”. This at least opened the door to conversation about her comparing herself to others. I explained that I was following my surgeons suggestion of weight loss to help with a good outcome post surgery, and my GP’s mention of weight loss and carb reduction to combat potential weight gain on pred. I was losing weight for health reasons!!

We talked further about it later and now she’s jumped on the “healthy eating” bandwagon and she’s starting to feel better. In this case it was worth the conversation because this is the first time in our 16 year friendship we faced such a struggle.

The other time was last Saturday while getting my nails done before vacation. The woman next to me started chatting and the subject of health came up. Eventually we disclosed we each had an anti immune condition. That should give us common ground....right?? Nope!

She went on to describe her Sjorens and related struggles. I listened patiently as she shared about not only her case, but her friend who was seriously ill from Scleroderma. Once again I listened quietly asking the odd question for clarification.

When she asked about my condition I described it, saying most folks go into remission and the main treatment is prednisone. Well....unleash the Kraken. She spewed the following:

“They are lying to you, auto immune diseases get worse, they DON’T go into remission, so I might as well get used to living with it.

“My mother was in prednisone and it killed her thyroid function and eventually her. Better get off of it ASAP, before my kidneys and liver shut down. or I will get diabetes.”

I was so angry and shocked, but in a public place full of people listening. So I chose to politely refute what she said, giver her accurate info, and told her to look up PMR when she got home. Then I ignored her completely and talked to the nail tech. Inside my head I’m thinking what makes you think your a f*%#ing expert in auto immune disease....are you a rheumatologist?? Just because she has a lived experience with one type of auto immune condition, doesn’t mean they are all alike and that we all react to medication differently!

Sorry for the length, but the subject of this post hit a nerve. That’s why I try and pick and choose who I disclose to. What I’d really like to do is carry around some sort of blunt instrument and bop them one when such idiotic words come out of their mouths. Then again, giving them accurate info may cause them to get their facts straight, thus avoiding the same thing to happen again in the future.

Reading what others have endured in here, especially by people in positions of authoriy, is shocking!! I worked 10 years for the United Church of Canada with 6 ministers and a congregation of about 250 members and only encountered the “pray away the sickness” approach by one parent of a chronically sick child. At that time mum was desperate to save her child and was grasping (and grappling) with her faith as he declined.

I’ve learned to surround myself with loving, helpful people, and try and ignore the idiots out there. Sifting the gems!

I like the blunt instrument idea!!

Did you see my ' Thought Insults " on the previous post . Have a look!

Carry them around in your head instead of your handbag to give all illdoers a metaphorical bop on the head while you smile sweetly .

As many are talking about their religious beliefs , I realised after a long time I was damaging myself by getting stressed by the comments of others far more than I would damage them in response , or manage to say something that would shake the stupid out of them. So I turn the other cheek.

So , quoting from one of the ' biggies' , I look and think , ' Forgive them Lord , they know not what they do.'

Then , the devil on my shoulder chooses the perfect insult in my mental arsenal to think as I smile and that makes me feel much better.

Serenity is the key to good mental health and surviving PMR.

Serenity and strength . Patience and perseverance . The qualities you will have developed to the level of a Buddhist monk by the time you reach the end of your journey with PMR.

It's one of the few silver linings of having to suffer this.

And much more practical than trying to find somewhere to bury the bodies!!😋😂😂

Big hugs and I think you are doing really well , Bee xx😘
